A Typhoon has hit the Canada Square at Yonge & Eglinton in Toronto!!! Typhoon has taken to the air. The last 2015 fledge watch for us and the last to fledge!

July 04, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

July 4th - 2015
Tracy started the watch at 6:30 AM with Typhoon still in the nest and sister Omega still flying high. Although there were some nice flights by Omege on and off all morning Typhoon whs still practising on the ledge.

When I arrived at 11:30 he was doing a little flapping and looked like he was getting ready to go soon.

Later on the afternoon Lance came out to watch with us for a little while and brought a very cool home made telescope out with him he set it up on Typhoon and plugged a small camera into the eye piece which then plugged into a laptop.

We were treated with a live video to watch for about an hour and watched Typhoon flapping and getting ready to go. we were all hopping Lance would get a video clip of him taking off for his first flight. Well Lance wrung the laptops battery out to the last drop and no flight yet but sure got some sweet footage of him.

Thanks Lance this is so cool!

Kathy came out to join us in the evening and got to see some more cool flights by Omega and more crazy flapping by Typhoon. Tracy said he is gonna go soon as we watched him climb the walls of the nest ledge and was just getting ready to go herself at about 8:30 when he took flight.

We watched him fly out hook to the north and over Young street past the CIBC building then hook back to the nest building with good height but not quite enough to make the roof. Kathy took off to Young street to go look for him we knew he had landed somewhere up high but where. Tracy went west and then north on Young, I staid put just in case he did not make a good landing and flew again.

By the time Kathy got to Young Street he had made the roof top and called me to say he was fine and made it to the top, Tracy had gone up Young for a better vantage point to make sure it was him she was seeing and not Omega who was at the time of his flight on the antenna of the nest building. Tracy confirmed that yes it was Typhoon he had just missed the roof and took flight again hooked back and landed on the roof where she was able to get a picture with her camera of his band with the blue tape.

We all parked ourselves in front of CIBC for a while until he walked the ledge back to the Duplex avenue side of the building and we packed it up for the night. We walked back to the cars and saw him sitting quietly on the edge of the roof and headed home.

Bruce will be out early in the morning to resume the watch and I will be back for the afternoon.

After things settle down Tracy will be putting together a flicker album of some of her photos and will post the link on this page.

Now the great flights with his sister, mom Haven and dad Malik will begin so bring your cameras and watch the lessons and playtime.

The Typhoon has stalled

July 03, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

Omega flying fantastically. She has been to the top of Rio Can as he highest landing, she has landed on the antenna on both the nest building and TVO/Canadian Tire.

Typhoon has still not left the ledge although Haven has tried several times to get him going he is still not ready.

For the last 3 days we have had an Osprey cruse through and Mom and Dad have gone after it chasing it off each time.

Omega flying well

July 02, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

Omega made 4 more flights today the first 3 were good but short flights keeping her altitude the forth was fantastic with a nice soar gaining lots of altitude as she landed on the nest building at nest ledge level. She is now on the ledge to the farthest south end of the west side.

Little Typhoon on the other hand has not taken any flights yet but he does seem to be flapping and running the ledge more now so hopefully it will be before the end of the week.

Omega and Typhoon were fed today with Typhoon again getting the lions share.

Omega has takes to the air

July 01, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

Tracy started the watch this morning at 7:30 and fond Omega and Typhoon was where we had left them last evening. She saw the adults bring in food 3 times before I got there at 11:00 and all of it went to Typhoon none for Omega.

When I got there Tracy was talking to 2 lads from Solar window washing who had come to take down the swing stage and had been forced off the roof by the adult female Haven. Wide eyed and just a little flustered they explained that they had no idea she had chicks yet and would just have to leave the stage there until Haven decided she would allow them back LOL!

I was just getting settled in for my shift and Tracy was telling me that Omega was very agitated about not getting any food and had has been flapping and running the back and forth on the ledge looking like she was ready to go and boom she was off.

She flew directly south to the new condo building on Duplex at the south end of Canada Square and landed safe and sound on the ledge just below the roof at about 15 or 16 floors up great flight!

For the rest of the morning she explored her new playground on the condo roof and was visited by Mom and Dad several times. At 4:00 PM Mom flew in again with Dad right behind her still no food so Omega took off again with Mom and Dad right on her tail heading directly for the nest building and home. She was loosing altitude and ended up landing on the black building between The nest and TVO.

Just before 7:00 PM Haven brought in a large food package and landed right beside Omega and she rushed up to grab it from mom and was cuffed by moms wing so she sat back and watched Haven prep the food with anticipation. I figured she was finally going to get a meal as I watched mom pluck the food for another 5 minutes but to my surprize she took off leaving Omega unfed and very upset. The food went again directly to Typhoon in the nest.

Omega ran back and forth the roof top flapping and yelling and then took flight heading again for then nest and food but again she was too low. She bumped the windows fluttering down the glass so I was up and ready to run to her rescue but she recovered and flew across Eglinton Ave. towards Rio Can. Once again she was too low and bumped the glass on Rio Can and started to flutter down she recovered and thankfully flew back down Duplex and landed back on the black building.

Just after 8:00 PM she jumped down of the edge onto the roof and by 9:00 she had not come back up so I guess she had had enough for the day and went to bed and so did I.

Happy Canada Day
Marion and Tracy

Omega leaves the playpen

June 30, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

This afternoon Haven flew in with food but did not land on the nest ledge-the playpen she landed on the concrete ledge just about 3 feet below. She was then joined by Omega who without thinking at all jumped down to get the food.

Tracy and I watched her attempt to eat the un-prepped food pack and though she did try she finally gave it up and left it alone and sulked beside it. Haven dropped back down beside her and prepped and plucked the food for her the suck.

She did some flapping and ledge running and made some attempts to jump back up to the nest this evening and came close to making it. She finally gave it up at about 8:40 and went to sleep. Her brother Typhoon was already down for the night so I headed home.

Tracy did get a few pictures and will post them soon.

Canada Square Kids Getting Ready

June 30, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I opened the Canada Square site today with Omega and Typhoon bouncing away on the ledge with Haven perched on the parapet above watching closely. Malik was on the Rio Can building and was on a mission to bring in breakfast. He was continuously lining up birds in the neighborhood but was unsuccessful in catching a meal until at 10am he picked up a sparrow and brought it in. Haven was off like a shot and barked at him to drop it on the roost perch and hand it over!! He did as he was told and she took it right over to the kids. Omega grabbed it and took it all for herself not sharing a tidbit with Typhoon who stood there and screamed wondering what just happened and where did Mommy go. Haven had unceremoniously thrown the food onto the ledge and gone back up to her parapet perch. She knows. She knows that Omega is ready and she is prepared to deal with her daughters first flight. After the meal the family settled down for an hour to rest and the rains began to move in. Omega was thrilled with the water that was blowing into the ledge onto her and put on quite a show that Typhoon was enjoying thoroughly with his head upside down. Malik began hunting again shortly after 11am and continued up until Marion arrived to take over the watch. He made one spectacular stoop and came up with a pigeon that he took around to the east side of Canada Square and did not share with the family. This was for him! Haven is quite a demanding female and runs a very tight ship. All food caught must be given over to her to dispense immediately or face her wrath. Unless you stash it out of her sight and eat it yourself. Malik has learned this trick and he does it well. I will look forward to seeing the family again tomorrow morning and hopefully see some great flights.

Fledge Watch to start on Monday June 29

June 26, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

Stopped in to check on The chicks Omega and Typhoon to see how they are progressing. Typhoon the youngest still has lots of down but his sister Omega is only showing a slight Mohawk of down on her head. As the chicks have not yet made it out of the nest area we call the playpen and onto what we call the front porch the ledge just below the nest I expect they will not take the first flights for a couple days yet. We will officially start the fledge watch on Monday the 29th. anyone interested in helping should contact head office at 416-481-1233

Canada Square banding

June 15, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

As promised here are the photoe and details of the June 10th banding.

There were 2 very healthy chicks 1 female at 820 grams band Y 98 with red tape named Omega
and 1 male at 435 grams band Y 17 with blue tape named Typhoon.

Great names!!!

Once again Solar window washing sent us 2 of their braver guys to assist with the extraction of the chicks from the ledge and once again the adult female Haven gave then the what for the entire time.

All went well and the chicks were put back on the ledge with Mom and Dad.

Thank you to Mark Heaton the Master bander, Solar , Northam realty and Canada Square Security for making this happen.

We will be starting the Fledge watch the week of June 22nd and are looking for volunteers. If you are interested in helping our please contact us at head office at 416-481-1233.

Canada Square Banding Success!

Sorry for the delays in getting the banding information and photos posted, but its been a very busy time indeed for us all and some very late nights again after fledge watches and having to release three downed fledglings at two different nest sites the same night!!

While coming from the Canada Square banding event at Eglinton and Yonge this afternoon and rushing to get Marion up the Duncan Mills fledge watch with fledglings low on window sills only one floor above the street level, and another fledgling having landed on the rood of a parked car in the parking lot,, security called from the Amexon management group from the Don Mills nest site while we were on route to advise us that one of their fledglings from the Don Mills nest site at Yonge & Eglinton had been blown off its nest ledge and was currently standing just outside of the entranceway at the 250 Ferrend Drive (the nest building).

So it we were once again diverted to from one fledge watch to rescue yet another downed fledgling from yet another nest site!!

So please bear with us all, as we have not been able to get any computer time to do postings and photo editing to get everything posted as yet on these two events,
Stay tuned for the updated news……..
