Tracy Simpson Reports:
Bruce Massey attended the MEC site today to drop off the rescue carrier and to do some more work on assessing the young boys. When he arrived he could only see Olimar up on the nest ledge flashing his red tape. He was looking good with little down left to go and quite active on the ledge. For a while the only bird in view was Olimar and Josally was no where to be seen. Now we know at MEC that one of the favorite games the little ones love to play is in and out of the window well where the nest box sits. Often when we can’t see a young one that’s exactly where it is. Not this time!
Bruce followed the actions of the adults as he did a walkabout of the four MEC towers. He was getting a response from Midnight around the base of MEC 1 so he set up across the street to watch. He brought out his scope and as he was panning around he got lucky and found Josally in the top of a tree out front MEC 1. He was settled in there for a while but was getting anxious to go home. Given the amount of down on this little man it was clear that his “fledge” was most likely an accident. Josally tried to get a little higher in the tree and decided that this wasn’t fun anymore, it was time to go home. He took a flight out over Robert Speck Parkway and maintained his height for a bit but was way too low for the nest ledge. He flumped into the south side of MEC 1 and fluttered down to the ground. Bruce was over in a shot and Josally gave him a good chase before surrendering to his rescuers towel.
Thank you to Bruce for the great rescue today, the first of the 2016 fledge watch season. Mark will be releasing Josally tonight to the roof of the nest building where he can continue to gain strength and confidence for the days to come.
Thanks again to Bruce and Mark for the great team effort.

Bruce Massey was out at MEC yesterday to spend some time assessing our two boys out there and they are certainly getting close. They are out of the nest box and playing in the window well which is the first brave step at this site that all chicks make before first flights. They both are rapidly losing their down and one has already considered jumping the gap which is the most important pre flight indicator. Bruce will be starting the watch informally tomorrow and delivering the rescue carrier to security.
If anyone has time that they would like to spend helping at MEC supporting Midnight, Renegade and their two boys, please contact me by email at tracy@peregrine-foundation.ca Whether you have an hour, a day or an afternoon to spend, any and all support is most welcome and incredibly helpful
Ok folks, here we go!

Banding Day at Mississauga Executive Centre went very well. There are 2 very healthy boys this year. Mark and Vern from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests weighed and banded the chicks and had 2 helpers Joseph and Sally who gave each chick a little drink of water and put coloured tape on the silver band to help the falcon watchers easily identify each bird during the fledge watch. below are the band numbers, weights and names for each,
635 grams Y over 23 with blue tape named Josally-for Joseph and Sally
635 grams Y over 24 with Red Tape named Olimar- for Olivia and Maria
Thanks go out to Colliers and MEC Security for all their support and to Mark and Vern from The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests for their valued commitment to the protection of this species.

There is evidence on camera of an eggshell at MEC! Is this our first hatch? Keep an eye for a peek of the first baby!

Yesterday I was out at the MEC nest site in an attempt to get the camera flowing to the internet. A big thank you to Peter and Manny for your assistance in getting it up and running! From the mechanical room level I could see that there were four eggs now in the nest bowl, the same bowl used last year, that had them tucked up into the small blind spot at the far side of the nest box. The male was incubating at the time and the female was out on the Symcor sign soaking up the sun. After spending some time identifying where the problem was with the camera and initiating some help with that, I went back outside just in time for a shift change. While I wasn’t able to get a read on the female, the resident male is still unbanded so his origins remain unknown. This is consistent with the male last year that we nicknamed Renegade. I will be back in the days to come to get a read on the resident female.

From the Holcim site I decided to head up to MEC on my way back north to check in on the progress of Hawkeye, Ieva and Adrianna. Reports from Winston of the girls trying to hunt on their own had me excited to see how well they are doing. MEC is such an incredible site supporting the family from both an environmental and positive human interaction perspective. This site is one of the more challenging ones in the respect that for the fledglings to find a mid level height to land on and work their way back up to the nest ledge height, they have to go across the street; a long flight for a young bird. This year we performed 5 rescues at MEC and today I sat at MEC 3 and was enjoying watching our success as a community flying around driving the parents just nuts!
I found Renegade on the Desjardins sign preening and there was no sign of anyone else. Wait… …what was that? I could hear one of the girls but couldn’t see her. Oh yes, there she is! On the ledge at MEC 4 hiding behind her enormous crop!!! Even though she was obviously quite full she was screaming like she hadn’t eaten in a week. Wow. At this time of day when Robert Speck Parkway quietens down that screaming really, really echos!! I found another one of the girls by following the screaming over at MEC 2 with just as big a crop as the first. Jeepers, what are they complaining about!! The juvenile on MEC 2 took off and headed for MEC 1 with her sister hot on her tail. They both landed on the northeast corner of the nest ledge and continued to complain about nothing. Midnight was not on site and the third juvenile was off on an adventure as well.
It was so great to see the girls doing well. A reminder of why we do what we do on fledge watch!! Thank you to the MEC community of supporters. These three girls are well on their way!

July 2nd - 2015
After my visit to the Mississauga Community centre for their day camp presentation with Nova (one of our feathered educational peregrines), I was able to swing over to Colliers at the MEC nest site and pick up all of the towels that were donated to the Canadian Peregrine foundation in their Towels for Talons drive.
A huge thank you to both Colliers and all that supported and donated towels to the CPF!!!
With an added bonus, just as I was departing, the loud screams of a fledgling falcon rang out from above, and I got a opportunity to photograph one of the adults as it brought in food to the two fledglings high up on one of the upper elevations of the condo just south of MEC #4.
Very nice to see then indeed!
