!!! Fantastic news from the William Osler Hospital! There has been a hatch!!

June 28, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Mark Nash Reports:

While out on the Up-town Yonge & Eglinton watch last night, I received some very good news indeed, as we received a telephone call from the staff at the William Osler Health care centre in Etobicoke to let us know that there was something different in the nest tray this morning. This morning, there were fluffy white cotton balls visible instead of the reddish-brown coloured oval rocks. :-)
Yes, it has been confirmed,,, in that there has indeed been a hatch!!!

Congratulations to all of the staff at William Osler Hospital!!

Stay tuned, as there is more exciting news to come………..

Still Waiting on a Hatch

June 17, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I stopped in at 2:00pm this afternoon to check on the incubation progress of our unknown adult female at the hospital.  Initial observations about this site had two eggs back in March that disappeared after a territorial battle between females.  At last observation near the beginning of May saw an empty nest tray and no serious courting amongst the adullt pair.  As of June 1st, we have 3 confirmed eggs in the tray all thanks to the folks at William Osler that continue to offer unwavering support for the nesting pair.

Today’s check of the nest tray through the magic peep hole revealed a sleepy female nestled down on top of her developing eggs.  Considering that hard incubation began at the very least on June 1st, that would put our progress at a minimum of 17 days as of today.  Stay tuned as we continue to check the progress of this female and attempt to identify our new girl on site.

!!! Confusing at its best, but still good news never the less! Now 3 eggs in the nest tray!!

June 01, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have just received updated news from William Osler Health Care Centre that their resident female (who ever she is these days) is currently incubating three eggs!! This is going to very interesting indeed!
After all of the fighting and squabbling going on out at this nest site over the nest ledge itself, we are at a loss now as to who the resident female now is. Unbelievably, the same resident male of 5 years,, “Hurricane” - (produced at the Toronto Sheraton hotel) is still there and has been dealing with all of the squabbling females. I guess your gotta think that all of these girls fighting for his attention must bolster his ego just a bit!
Stay tuned………..

!!! 2 Eggs, both adults in full incubation mode!

May 03, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

CPF Postmaster Reports:

With many thanks to Bruce, three hours of observations paid off this morning as he was able to confiorm the hostpitals report of two more eggs in the nest tray being incubated and tended to by both adults.
Bruce was able to confirm the the resident male is still Hurricane, the little male that was produced at the Toronto Sheraton Hotel back in 2004 and showed up at the William Osler Hospital in 2007. He has been the territorial resident at this nest site ever since. His female mate dawns a Black over green band - (still yet to be identified) and a purple coloured USFW band. Bruce whitnessed a changing of the guard at approx. 11am and it appears that both adults are in fact sharing the incubating duties.
Stay tuned………….

!!! Tragic news - the eggs are gone!

April 08, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have just received tragic news that as of this mornings check of the nest via the small peep-hole, that both of the newly laid eggs are gone and no longer in the nest tray. While we have not seen any recent evidence of additional squabbling going on with the two adult females that were embraced in a bitter battle over the territory and nest ledge two weeks ago, we know that things can change and happen very quickly when these fights brake out. This would not be the first time that we have seen eggs trampled & crushed by two squabbling peregrines on the nest ledge.
In addition to this tragic news, it is also being reported that there has been no recent sightings of any female being seen on territory.
It is worth noting that access to the nest ledge is both under lock and key and restricted.

Stay tuned….

!!! Great News - A second egg!

April 05, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have just received encouraging news in that a second has appeared in the nest tray. While the resident adult female is still not involved in full time incubation activities, the situation looks very promising indeed that this new unknown adult female is been successful in claiming the territory and nest ledge, and starting to produce eggs. No new squabbling has been reported and it might appear that this new female (who-ever she might be) is here to stay.
Stay tuned……

!!! First Egg!

April 04, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

CPF Postmaster Reports:

With a huge thank you to the maintenance and engineering staff, we have been able to confirm that the first egg was produced and currently in th nest tray. While the adult female has yet to be identified, both her and her mate have been very active in courtship activities that have resulted in the production of of their first egg. Typical of the hot and humid temperatures that we’ve been having over the past four days, and the fact that she has only just laid the first egg, the pair are not as yet involved in full time incubation activities. We are hopeful that they will continue to produce more eggs over the next week and look forward to a successful hatch.

!!! Spring Has Arrived!!

March 19, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Spring is a busy time for all of us at the Canadian Peregrine Foundation as the birds are returning from the south and look to set up shop.  I stopped by the William Osler site today just after 5:00pm and was greeted with the sounds of peregrines in love.  The female flew to the northeast corner of the building and sat calling while the male displayed his flight prowess for her.  Within seconds of his display ending, he landed beside her and copulated with her.  It is unclear whether this pair is the same male and female from last year as the light was poor and bands were not apparent.  One thing is sure though, we have a pair looking to raise a family here.

After leaving the corner of the building, the female flew out front the east side of the hospital and dipped straight into the nest tray where she talked up a storm.  The male was not far behind.  Initially he landed on the “H” on the east side, all the while responding to her calls with e-chups of his own, until he could no longer contain himself and left his perch to join her at the edge of the tray.  We look forward to seeing more of this pair and patiently await the arrival of eggs!!

Two adults on site, lots of courtship happening, no eggs as yet!

March 24, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Mark Nash Reports:

I had an opportunity to spend a few hours at the William Osler nest site today and watched the two adults very active on the nest ledge, on and off the nest tray itself and lots of interaction with each other. Although I did not see any mating, both adults very vocal and spent allot of time in behind the Hospital sign on the nest tray. With a huge thank you to security, I was able to peak through out peep-hole in behind the nest tray and was able to get a good look at the nest tray itself. No eggs as yet.
Stay tuned,,,,

November Updates

December 01, 2009 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Bruce Massey Reports:

FYI , Over the last month or so I had the occasion to briefly go by Osler Hospital.  There was  at least 1 PeFa in attendance, couldn’t tell if Male or Female (Driving) and it was on the North Sign.

Have been by Yellow Pages twice ( Mid November - Female In attendance and end of November- Male in attendance).

As with the North York pair I hadn’t seen the Female in a month or so, until the end of the Month were I saw a Female just North of Finch. and the Male since the middle of November.

Finally I was at Bell Building area and had a male sitting on the Corner of the Building by the Nest Box.

Thanx Bruce
