!!! General Brock in Warren, Michigan

May 07, 2015 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Marilyn Weller Reports:

Taken from a FB post:

BREAKING NEWS! Chris Becher and Barb Baldinger have identified the new male at the new GM/former Lowe Campbell Ewald Building in Warren, MI! He is General Brock with an all black band of 22/V. He hatched at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ontario and was banded on May 18, 2012. He was named by elementary students from Windsor’s General Brock Public School who witnessed the banding.
He made several stops before showing up in Warren. Local birder, Tom Heatley saw General… Brock on October 21, 2012 at the North Marsh of Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township, Michigan. Last year, Chris and Barb saw him at both the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe and the “Nine Mile Tower” (Shore Club Apartments & Marina) in St. Clair Shores. At both of those locations, he was with a female named Theresa (black/red, 20/W), from St. Mary’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.
It is interesting to note that this is not the same “new male” who out competed Magellan at this site last September. That male had a black/red band and was never identified. So, sometime over the winter, General Brock took over. He and Isabella (b/r, 74/X) are currently nesting on the roof of the new GM building.

!!! 3 fluffy chicks have arrived in K-W !!!

May 05, 2015 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

On Monday, May 4, Mystery and Caster were a lot more restless than usual. There were frequent shift changes and they fussed in the nest, moving pebbles around. At lunch time, one of the adults had brought a bird in and tucked it next to the adult sitting on the nest. Mystery was probably feeling (and seeing) one or more of the eggs in its “pipping” stage, which is when the chick first starts to break a hole in the egg shell using its egg tooth, which is a hard bump on top of the beak. 4 eggs were still visible when Caster came in for a shift change around 5:00 but Mystery was not leaving those eggs! Early this morning, the CTV live feed was down and shortly before 9:00, the feed was fixed and an eggshell could be seen, tossed away from the nest. While Mystery repositioned over the nest, a first glimpse of a downy, white chick could be seen wriggling in the half shell underneath it.

At a shift change at 11:00, 2 fluffy white chicks were confirmed to be hatched and a hole, could be seen in egg number 3. The third fluffy chick appeared shortly thereafter!!! Caster brought in a fresh kill and the young eyasses (baby falcons) had their first feed by 1:00. A second feed happened later in the afternoon as those young chicks sure are hungry! Congratulations to proud parents, Mystery and Caster!!!

(If everything goes well, banding will take place in 18-28 days. The fledge watch will start at the beginning of June. Anyone interested in joining the team, please go to the volunteer section on the main page to sign up.)

Another precious egg…..GONE!!!

- Port Colborne - ADM Mill

Doug Garbutt Reports:

Today I turned the monitor on & the egg produced yesterday is gone. I assume the resident female consumed it.

!!! Another egg! (but our hopes aren’t too high)

May 04, 2015 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill

Doug Garbutt Reports:

After a valliant effort of the juvie that has been hanging around trying to take over the site, Trillium has prevailed and today she has produced an egg at exactly 1:30 pm. We sure hope this turns out OK. Stay tuned.

!!! Its feeding time with three new family members!

May 04, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Volunteer Reports:

Monday May 4th - 2015

Just received this little update from the Duncan Mills nest box via photos taken from the Harlequin web cam, and it was quite obvious that there are now three little peregrine hatchlings! Quest was caught feeding her three new family members.
Cute is an understatement!

!!! 4 Eggs confirmed!!! Full time incubation!!

April 30, 2015 - Oshawa - Oshawa Activity

Mark Nash Reports:

April 30th - 2015

Some great news indeed! With a huge thank you to Ken and Ernie out at the Oshawa Lake Ridge Hospital for spending the time with me today, getting me safely to and from the roof elevation where the nest box was installed for the grins to complete a site visit and nest box inspection in an effort to confirm what’s been going on with the peregrines.

I am delighted to report that we can confirm that the pair are in fact involved in full time incubation with 4 eggs in the nest box!! In addition, one of the other two important questions was also answered, (who are the resident adults)??.

Well, we can positively confirm after reviewing the photos taken during my visit today that the resident adult female is in fact still Alfrieda, (a peregrine that was produced in Buffalo NY in 2012), banded with a Black over Green 73 over AW .

Sadly although, we were not able to confirm the identity of the resident adult male,, (but highly suspect that it is still Simcoe, Banded Black 63 over X), a peregrine that was produced at the Canada Square nest site in Toronto at Yonge & Eglinton. While the resident adult male was observed today as dawning a solid Black coloured band, we were NOT able to get a positive ID on him and we can not positively confirm that it is Simcoe.

Over the past two weeks, there has been a territorial dispute and fighting between two males,, so it will be interesting to see who the “victor” is!

Over the past weeks, Ernie has been monitoring the peregrines as close as he can and provided some really important observation reports that helped us plan the nest box install, and with the support of Ken and all of the engineering staff for physically getting the nest box installed at its current elevation without the need of a crane that was originally proposed to be able to get the nest box to its final resting place.

In short, a lot of brute force and back breaking manpower indeed, as you know, the new CPF nest boxes are now being made from the newer marine composite materials, (with the composite boards that are twice as heavy as the equivalent sized wood products)! Then there is the typical 50 pound bags of pea-gravel, with each nest box requiring 5 plus bags!

The next step is the nest box camera. Because of the rather hasty install of the net box,,, (remembering that the birds wait for no one),, and we were just in time to get the new nest box installed, there simply was not enough time to get the camera in along with all of the power lines and internet feeds installed.

Also remembering, that we made the decision to install the nest box at a different elevation that was originally planned, (due to the fact that the peregrines decided to go to another location and different elevation on the hospital that they nested on last season)!!! Talk about having to scramble AGAIN and change your plans! As you know, working with peregrines, you gotta be flexible and be able to act / react quickly!!

Over the next few weeks while the pair are involved in their incubation, (and thank goodness things will be much more stable), we will be working on the new nest box camera. It is our plan to have it programmed and ready to be installed during the time that the young hatchlings are out of the nest box while they are being banded. We will install the new colour nest box cam when we have to go to the nest box for the extraction, as this is a time that we have to wait at the nest box until the banded hatchlings are returned.

The hospital is planning to make ready a temporary power supply and the internet connection so we can power up the camera and get its live signal to the internet.

Stay tuned……………….

Paul Gosselin shared some great photos of Voltaire taken this evening. She looks great and like she is back in good form after her time in rehab.

Also, here is a link to a Windsor Star article on our local Peregrines. Great to have local media interested in telling our stories!

!!! Nesting Activity Continues

May 01, 2015 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Linda Woods Reports:

Nesting activity continues for “Hunter” the male and “Seven” the female.

This morning the male delivered food to the ledge. Not sure if this was just a bite to eat for the incubating female, or if it was meant for a feed, but positive behaviour either way, indicating that incubation is continuing.

This evening another hand off of the ledge occurred around 6:30, giving the female time to stretch her wings and hunt for herself.  Hunter was quick to take his turn at incubation and disappeared into the back of the ledge and out of sight.
