!!! Migratory Bird Casualties in Toronto

October 31, 2012 - International, National and Local News

Kathy Reports:

Very insightful article in the New York Times regarding the number of deaths of migratory birds in Toronto…well worth a read.

As per the author Ian Austen:

There is no precise ranking of the world’s most deadly cities for migratory birds, but Toronto is considered a top contender for the title.

!!! O’Connor gets some visitors!

October 29, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Went out to check on O’Connor today before the storm moves in.  No sign of Jack anywhere and no visible sign of her either at first.

I noticed a Turkey Vulture heading towards the nest ledge and then looked over to the East and there were about 20 of them kettling over another building nearby.  My immediate thought was ‘wow’ that is cool and good thing O’Connor isn’t here.

Lol..suddenly in the reflection of the glass I see a falcon speeding around the building heading straight for the one that has dared to come near ‘her’ ledge!  Of course a full on assault by O’Connor ensued and the TV defended himself (or herself) quite admirably flipping over with talons up to defend.

Despite the high winds she was relentless and succeeded in escorting said TV over to the rest of his flock and they all headed eastwards..away from the upcoming bad weather that is coming.

May all our feathered friends stay safe over the next few days!

Canada Square peregrine report 20121022

A beautiful sunny and mild day made better by the sight of one of the peregrines.
I was doing my usual *cross the road from the bank* thing when I noticed a peregrine sitting on the 15th floor railing on the northeast corner of Canada Square. I assumed from the size that this was Haven.
In order to be sure however I fetched the binoculars.
Sure enough this was a very dishevelled Haven with her back to Eglinton and facing down Yonge street. I had to go down Yonge a bit in order to see her colour. I had a few people looking up to see what I was staring at through the binoculars:) I guess the people who use Yonge are not used to seeing anyone using them in the city.

!!! Freddie and Voltaire

October 28, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

We have had great reports this weekend from two of our site Watchers, Bob & Joanne, they were driving by the Bridge and they saw Voltaire sitting in the nest tray very busy preening herself with Freddie sitting on the ledge below her looking up at her. Thank You both for letting us know. Also, another one of our Watchers, Paul, has reported to us that he has seen another pair of Peregrines on the Hilton and Chrysler Building downtown. That pair seem to enjoy hanging around the letters of that building. We are hoping that they will have a nest around there this coming spring. Thank You, Paul.

!!! Both adults back on the nest ledge this morning!

October 26, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Oct. - 26th - 2012

Just a quickly update as I was scanning the nest web cams this morning. Sadly, I was not quick enough to snap the shot while both adults were doing some bonding with each other this morning, but I did manage to get one snapshot of one of the adults before it left.
Nice to see them together again at home.

A visitor appears - Who’s watching who?

Hello CPF
This afternoon, a peregrine falcon landed on the window sill of our 22nd floor condo on White Oaks Blvd in Oakville. I was able to take many photographs of him (or her). It is now 8:50 p.m. and s/he is still on the window ledge. S/he has a blue tapedband around the right ankle and seems very tame, not the least fussed about our watching through the blind. I am attaching a photograph. I also have a good video clip if you would like to post it somewhere.
Please advise if there is anything we can do to protect this beautiful bird.
Thank you

A quickly update, as we have just received good news from Barb Baldinger with regards to one of the Winsor juveniles who was identified by his band number in Michigan USA today.

Hi CPF
This morning, at 9:40 AM, I received a phone call from Tom Heatley, a frequent birder at Lake St. Clair Metropark (formerly called Metro Beach) in Harrison Township, Michigan. He was at the section of the park called the North Marsh, looking at a Peregrine Falcon in a tree. Tom said it had one band with black 22 over black V and red tape on the other band. A quick Internet check showed me that this Peregrine Falcon is General Brock, banded on May 18th of this year at the Ambassador Bridge. Good to know that he is doing well!

!!! 2012 Nesting Report on Screech!

October 21, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

I had checked earlier this summer and couldn’t find any news and then got caught up at our site with fledge activities but am now catching up on news that I missed.

Our 2009 born Screech has again nested successfully with her mate Zeus at the AT&T Tower in Pontiac, Michigan as per Barb Baldinger.  They produced 2 offspring this year, one male and one female!

Very happy to find that news and to see that our girl is still going strong!!  Screech is the daughter of our former resident female Angel and our resident male Jack.

!!! More good news

We’ve received reports that a pair of Peregrine Falcons are hanging out on the letters of the Chrysler Bldg downtown near the river. We hope to monitor them and find out where they came from. We will keep you informed on what is going on.
