May 17, 2012 - London - TD Tower
Tracy Simpson Reports:
On Thursday May 17th, Tracy and I were in London again to deliver CPF’s Project School Visit. After the first school of the day, Tracy dropped me downtown to watch the nest and inform interested Londoner’s of the progress of their pair. I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say I spoke to 100 or more folks over the course of the day letting them know the information we have gathered over the past couple of visits to the London City Centre nest site. Several people approached enthusiastically asking what new news I had, while many more inquired about what I was doing. I offered some looks through the scope at either Thunder or Dougal when they were perched in view. It’s very encouraging to meet so many interested people, one lady even mentioning that she will have visiting bird enthusiast friends visiting from California that she will bring to see the Peregrines!
A special visitor dropped by for a nice long chat, Ron Gould, Ministry of Natural Resources Species At Risk Biologist from the Aylmer district. We chatted about the pair, some of Ron’s current and previous observations of Thunder and Dougal as well as trading stories of Peregrine falcon adventures from our pasts. We chatted about the importance of everyone working as a team to observe and help out this pair of amazing birds.
Dougal and Thunder were in and around the nest building all day and they both were at the ledge for prolonged periods. The warm weather allowed them a few extended absences from the nest tray. Ron mentioned that just as Tracy and I were arriving, that the pair had chased off a Turkey Vulture forcing it from the sky and into a tree. At least one egg is believed to be in the nest tray and we hope it will hatch very soon. As we are able, we will be back in the coming weeks to continue observations of the pair and create more local buzz. Fingers crossed for a successful season!
Check back as more photos and observations are to come!!

We have received some interesting news from Mary Beth in NY USA
She writes:
I have good news-Zanar has produced four eggs in the nest box and has a handsome new mate, who has not been banded. The box was relocated to the US side last fall because of the deck project.
The crew also added two sheets of 8×4 plywood in front of the box to allow for more walking room. I hope it helps. The crew will be checking for chicks next week.
I’ll let you know what I find.
Hope you have a great season.
Talk to you soon.
best,
Mary Beth Warburton - N.Y. USA
CPF note: Zanar had lost her mate earlier this year. We are thrilled to hear she has found a new mate and that they have laid eggs!

May 19, 2012 - Etobicoke - William Osler
CPF Postmaster Reports:
May 19th - 2012
Bruce Massey reports this morning after doing the rounds at the various nest sites to get further updates on the status of the nesting peregrines, that he can confirm an “eye-ball” view and confirmed TWO EGGS in the nest tray at the William Osler - Etobicoke General Hospital nest site.
Earlier this season, there were territorial disputes and battles going on at this territory where it appears that O’Connor - Banded Black M over Green 87 - (the previous resident territorial adult female) lost the battle (and the territory & nest site) to a younger sub adult female.
This new younger sub-adult (now the resident female) has produced two eggs in the nest tray at the William Osler nest site and is currently involved in full time incubation duties with her newly acquired mate (the same resident adult male named Hurricane -that has been the resident adult male at William Osler for many years).
Hurricane has obviously accepted his new gal and is actively involved in incubation duties.
The new camera continues to produce an incredible HD colour image that is now being displayed on the internal flat screen monitor that allows daily observations of the nest ledge and all of the live real time happenings and activity from the nest ledge and nest tray.
We are hopeful that with the hospitals support that we can connect the new live camera image to an internet connection so that we can get the live real-time colour images to the CPF web site and global audience soon.
Stay tuned………..
:
The previous resident adult female at this nest site (named O’Connor) has been found and obviously doing well, as she has taken over the nest site at the Sun Life centre nest site at Bloor and Islington. O’Connor is currently tending to FOUR hatchlings with her new mate - (the existing resident / territorial male named Jack) at the Sun Life Centre nest site!!!
Banding at the Bloor & Islington - 3300 Bloor Street - Sun Life Centre has been scheduled for May 24th at 1:30 in the east tower lobby and is open to the public.

May 18th - 2012 - Banding Day
A great day in Windsor today, as four healthy hatchlings were banded and returned safe and sound to their parents without incident. A huge thank you too ALL who made the day such a great success! With more than 150 plus people in attendance throughout the event to witness some of Windsors newest residents, the four young baby peregrine hatchlings were sexed, banded, checked for their health, photographed, named and returned to their waiting parents in record time.
With the Ministry of Natural Resources at the helm and at the banding table, CPF Chapter coordinators and CPF head office staff and volunteers, the four young hatchlings were banded in record time and declared healthy.
CBC radio held a “name the chick contest” on live radio the day before, and other entries from General Brock Public school, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and our hosts of the banding, The Canadian Transit Company - and the Ambassador Bridge, the young hatchlings were identified as two females, named - Viper and Twitter, and two males names General Brock and Eddy.
80 plus students from the General Brock public school were on hand to witness the banding with CTV TV , CBC and the Windsor Star all on hand to cover the event.
The young hatchlings were weighed, sexed, aged and named, then banded and returned to their parents back up on the nest ledge. Marion Nash from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation performed the extraction from the bucket boom lift with the assistance of the Canadian Transit Company boom operator who both hosted the banding event and provided the boom truck and bridge staff to get us to and from the nest ledge.
With hundreds of pictures and live video footage taken throughout the day, radio, TV and newspaper all in attendance, we can say with all confidence that this was the most photographed event of the day in Windsor for sure!!! A HUGE THANK-YOU goes out to all of the CPF volunteers, supporters and sponsors, and members of the community that came out to assist and support this happening!!!
