!!! Some great photos of the resident adult female named Diamond, banded Black 42 over Red H

May 01, 2012 - Niagara Falls

CPF Postmaster Reports:

May 1st - 2012

A big thank you to both Roger and Sage for these great shots of Diamond, the resident adult female nesting in the Niagara Falls goarge.
Roger writes:
Hi All,
Sage and I were at the Niagara Gorge today to photograph the nest. Results were ordinary with one pefa on the nest. We were at the tourist coin operated binoculars for stability of the camera. She suggested we walk down river. About fifty yards down the railing, there is a small out cropping of the railing across from two bench seats. We spotted Diamond perched on a birch tree over the river no more than thirty feet from us. We photographed her for about a half an hour during which she changed position on the branch so we could get band shots. Her left leg band was 42 black over H red with purple on her right leg. Sage says to tell you her first reading of the top number was wrong due to an incomplete view on a photo.
These are the best photos I got of her. You are welcome to use them for your group as you see fit. We will check every couple of days in hopes of catching the hatching.
Good luck,
Roger

Full time incubation continues.

CPF Postmaster Reports:

April 29th - 2012

All quiet this beautiful sunny morning at the gorge site. We will try to get there every two-three days to determine hatch date.

There is always a rainbow near the Peregrine aerie so I’m thinking “Rainbow” as a name for one of the baby Pefas. :)

!!! Mystique at the Fisher Building in Detroit, Michigan

April 30, 2012 - London - TD Tower

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Mystique was hatched at the London TD Tower nest site in London, Ontario in 2006  Too old to safely band as a nestling, it wasn’t until she fledged that she was officially banded and named when she came to the ground in need of rescuing.  She remained aloft after her initial ordeal and gained the flight skills necessary for migration under the watchful eye of her parents.  She showed up at the Wayne State University, just 1.5 miles south of the Fisher Building, in 2008 but it wasn’t until 2009 that she took over as resident female at the Fisher Building.  Mystique and her new partner were seen pair bonding but yet did not nest that year.  In 2010, the pair was again seen mating and bonding but no nesting attempt was found after an extensive search of the building ledges.  In 2011,  Mystique and her mate were still present but did not produce any young.  While it is unknown why the pair have yet to produce offspring, its is wonderful to note that they are still on site, holding the territory and working towards success.  Great news and a wonderful success for London peregrines!!  This is just one of the many amazing community and scientific benefits that result from the efforts made to band juvenile peregrines in Ontario and stories like these are what its all about!!  Our thanks go out to Barb Baldinger for the photo of Mystique and to the Michigan DNR for reading her recovery band and continuing to monitor her progress.

!!! Evidence of first hatch at Toronto Sheraton

May 01, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Jan Chudy Reports:

My notes indicated that we could expect a first hatch on May 1. I have been watching from France viua the web cam since about 6:30 a.m. France time. I captured this shot at 2:14 p.m. France time, or 8:14 a.m. Toronto time. It clearly shows an egg which looks as though has succumbed to a hatch. Fingers crossed for our first Toronto Sheraton eyase of 2012.
