Viewing the territory.

March 23, 2012 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Friday, March 23, 2012
— (7:20 a.m. to 7:40 a.m.) — Diana has taken over one of Connor’s favourite roosts. She is perched on the lower pole section of the pitchfork shaped antenna at 275 Slater Street (formerly the Standard Life Building). She is facing east on this sunny morning. After a few minutes she flies over to the top pole of the antenna. At 7:40 a.m. she spots a prey in the distance and takes off a top speed towards the SE. I wait a few minutes to see if she returns but she must have found another rooftop to enjoy her breakfast.

Take care and have a great weekend everyone!

Both adults still very visible!

Lots of territorial activity!

March 20, 2012 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

March 20, 2012
7:20 a.m –8:10 a.m. - It’s a breezy morning in Ottawa. Construction workers are working on the ground level of the Delta Ottawa City Centre hotel while high above Connor is perched on the SW corner of the rooftop. He is keeping a steady eye towards the south of the city. After 5 minutes he takes off over Lyon Street towards the high-rises in that area. Pigeons scatter helter skelter when they spot the falcon heading their way. He heads in back of the Minto Place Suite Hotel and the Minto Towers. I find him again perched on the antenna of 275 Slater Street building (formerly the Standard Life Building). There is quite a bit of activity in the skies around him. Canada geese in v formation briefly catch his attention and then he returns to preening. He is still perched on the antenna when I leave.
Take care,
N. McKenna

Lots of activity!

March 16, 2012 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Good morning,

Friday, March 16, 2012 — (7:15 a.m.)

I was walking up Lyon Street and the sound of morning traffic could not smother the piercing cries of the seagulls high above Albert Street. I looked up scanning the rooftops and observed an adult perched on the NW corner of the middle Constitution Square Tower rooftop. It was keeping keeping watch on the downtown core on this overcast morning. I could not find its mate at this time.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

!!! Very confusing going-ons indeed!!

March 24, 2012 - Brampton - Courthouse

CPF Postmaster Reports:

We still have a lot and not much going on in Brampton.
Wednesday March 14th - 2012

Regular sightings of a female downtown and at the courthouse , alone and with a male. I observed mating or an attempt on Wed March 14th. Since then she has roosted downtown some nights and on the Courthouse other nights.

Today, Saturday March 24th- 2012
I found a pair circling downtown. Then the male then left due east with the female walking back and forth and calling very agitated, then following from the George st building.

I checked the old hospital then circled around to the courthouse, I found a pair, or the pair, circling there, then I lost them.

It was a half an hour and there is 4 kilometres between these two locations. We either have two pairs or Truss is having trouble deciding on a nest location.

It will keep me very busy as I will check both locales if I have a sighting at one, till I determine for sure whether we have one pair or two.

I am certain that it is Truss that I see at the courthouse, because she regularly visits the old nest ledge.

!!! Observations gathered today are telling us a very different story from earlier on in the week!

March 24, 2012 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Saturday March 24th - 2012

Despite the crappy weather, rain, cold winds blazing in from the east across the lake and much colder temps compared to earlier on this week, I ventured down to the Burlington nest site to meet Bill and Sue to gather additional observations on the Burlington lift bridge peregrines.

Unfortunately, due to the traffic congestion I missed Bill and Sue, but did get an opportunity to speak with them by cell phone to get their tale of the take and their observations from earlier on in the day. They report that both adult peregrines have been in and out of the nest box, and on the nest box porch for several hours talking up a storm.

Upon my arrival, I could clearly see one peregrine roosting on the nest box porch.

During the time of my visit, it was clear that the “play-pen” was not being occupied by either of the grins, and no eggs were visible on same.

While only a single peregrine was observed during the time of my visit, I can confirm that there are no eggs on the top of the concrete column under the Skyway bridge that has been referred to as the “Play-pen”.

Interestingly although, an adult peregrine was in fact inside the nest box, scraping and laying down in the nest box. Over a period of 30 minutes, the adult peregrine fussed around in the nest box, moving individual pieces of gravel involved in an ongoing effort to dig a deeper scrape / bowl, and it repeated this action over and over until it finally layed down in the scrape and went to sleep.

Sadly, I was unable to identify the sex of the grin as it was difficult to properly identify it’s size, and at no time did it give me a clear view of either one of its legs to see its legs band colours.

Stay tuned for updated news…….

!!! Yes, there is an egg!

March 24, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Jan Chudy Reports:

I was watching the web cam from France late this evening.  Rhea Mae was hunkered down in the nest box and Tiago was on the standpipe.  Suddenly at 11:43 France time, when the view refreshed, both adults were admiring their first egg.  Congratulations all round - keep up the good work!
