All is well here so far

June 07, 2011 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill

Doug Garbutt Reports:

Just wanted to let everyone know that everything is all good here (so far). The 2 eyases are losing lots of their white down, their feathers have quickly appeared & we are expect them fledge soon, perhaps this weekend! Mom & Dad have been supplying plenty of food for them. Olivia & Max have been exercising their wings, preening and getting very brave by venturing out of the safety of the nest box to the ledge outside. They have been stumbling around on it or just laying down looking over the edge down to the to the Welland Canal so very far below. Apparently they have no fear of  heights even at this young age. We have had some very bad weather here the last week (high winds) & I’m sure that we would have lost both these young falcons had it not been for the move from the beam to the box. They are not out of the woods yet but at least they still have a chance.

!!! Jack & Angel Put on a Show

June 07, 2011 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

I spent about an hour this afternoon watching Angel and Jack do ledge displays for the kids.  Even the third one that’s usually hiding/sleeping woke up to watch - and I could finally see that she is still black and white compared to her siblings that look more like juveniles.

This is one of my favorite times when the parents fly by the ledge and engage in mock battles, playful tag type behaviour and just generally wicked aerial displays to show the young ones what awaits them.  All three heads were turning left to right and up and down following their parents movements and I could even hear some excited screaming…more than likely thinking where’s the food  :)

All four on view

June 07, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Jan Chudy Reports:

You have to look closely at the middle of the interior part of the ledge (just past the stand pipe) to find Cinnamon, but all four are there.

Some great shots!

June 07, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Good afternoon CPF

I know you’re incredibly busy…fledge watch surely take priority over picture posting…but I’ll keep sending my favourite captures!

They were up on the edge of the nest tray gazing out for quite a while. I suspect the adults were putting on a show to entice them to make the leap. Sunshine (I think) showed off her wings, but only used them to go to the other end for some food.

Not much longer, though it’s too soon for me!

All the best-Eileen

The kids are looking good!

June 07, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

I’m guessing it’s Sunshine starting to work up her nerve…this is the first I’ve seen one on the ledge this year. And she’s really working her wings…and what beautiful wings they are indeed!
Eileen

We’re watching!

June 07, 2011 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 7, 2011 — 12:10 p.m. — I was in front of the Delta Ottawa City Centre hotel when I heard strong vocalizing coming from the rooftop. I was across the street and could not find any adult falcon within my field of vision. I’m quite certain that an adult falcon was in the nest area. I looked up towards the Minto Place Suite Hotel and saw the same trio of Turkey Vultures that I’ve seen twice before soaring above the Minto buildings. The urgent cries kept coming for a few minutes until the vultures disappeared from sight. I searched the surrounding area to see if any windows were being washed nearby or if anything else could be upsetting the peregrine falcon but came up empty-handed.
12:55 p.m. — I came back to see if anything was amiss on the rooftop and all was quiet until I reached the hotel and heard the now familiar vocalizing of the peregrine falcon. By the time I crossed the street the falcon was silent once again.
Take care and keep smiling!
Ciao,
N. McKenna

Everythig looking good!

June 06, 2011 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Monday, June 6, 2011 — 12:10 p.m. — It’s a sunny and breezy day in the downtown core. An adult falcon has taken the opportunity to step out from the nest area. I can see it perched right in front of the second pillar from the NW section of the Delta Ottawa City Centre looking towards the nest site.
1. 1:00 p.m. — When I swung by again at 1:00 p.m. the falcon remained perched in front of the second pillar.
Take care and keep smiling!
Ciao,
N. McKenna

June 06, 2011 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Stay tuned for updates on the hatchlings as additional information becomes available.

!!! Banding day booked and confirmed for June 10th! Stormin has been accepted by the resident female and now providing food for his new family!!

June 06, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Mark Nash Reports:

Just a short note to let you all know that the banding date has been booked and confirmed for Friday June 10th at 10 am in the morning! Its going to be a very busy day indeed as we have also confirmed and booked the Scarborough Yellow Pages banding this same day at 2 pm in the afternoon.

An update on the Canada Square nest site peregrines,,, the best news in that the new resident male has been providing food to the resident female and actively involved in the family rearing process, despite that he is not the “sire” of the young hatchlings.

We have been monitoring the nest site very closely since the original resident male named “Irving” - (banded Black B over Green 44,, - who was produced in 2007 in Chicago Ill. USA.) was killed in a collision with a cable several blocks from the Yonge & Eglinton nest site just over a week ago.

As you may recall, a new adult male was literally on territory and courting the resident unbanded female as we retrieved Irving’s body from the Toronto Animal Services.

The new male, identified as an adult male named “Stormin”, was produced at the Toronto Sheraton nest site in 2009, and banded Black 30 over Black Y.

The resident unbanded adult female was not eager to accept “Stormin” and there were some very tense moments observed as she initially tried to drive Stormin out of the territory and protect her chicks.

Today, not only has she accepted his presence, but Stormin has been observed participating in the rearing of the young hatchlings! He has been providing food for the resident female despite the fact that the young hatchlings are not his! At this point, it appears that Stormin has fully accepted the responsibility of the resident male, as he has been observed both defending the territory and continues to provide food for the resident female. She has also now allowed Stormin for the first time into the nest ledge unattended with the hatchlings. While he is not actually brooding the hatchlings or actually fed them himself, he has not taken any action to hurt them at this point.

Stay tuned………..
