!!! No Nesting Activity seen

June 24, 2009 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Linda Woods Reports:

The past few weeks daily observations of the peregrine pair frequenting the University and Gerrard St area, has provided information that this pair is not nesting on the east side of Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The adult female, Wind and her mate, are seen on a daily basis sitting on any one of the neighbouring buildings. They tend to like condos on the west side of Bay St. and the power plant tower to name a few.  The ledges of Mt. Sinai provide shade in the late afternoon and a perfect time for viewing.

Observations will continue, at this time it is evident that a hatch did not occur at this location. There are no  reports that they have re-clutched anywhere else in the area.

Many Thanks to the CPF Volunteer who has taken the time to send in the observations of this site. It is much appreciated.

!!! Hot Hot, Staying in the Shade

June 24, 2009 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Today, Spec is estimated to be approximately 40 days of  age. Hatched between, May 12 - May 15 he still has not fledged.  Today’s heat would keep anyone in the cool comfort of home. He spent a good portion of the day in the shade of the pillar.  This afternoon, all four juveniles were seen on the nest ledge. OH GREAT, which one is which.  Spec has a little white remaining on his backside. Little flapping today, more fanning of the wings to cool off.

Early this evening, not much activity from any of the falcons. Just a laze about kind of day with the heat.  Today’s High  32 degrees C not including the humidity.

Fledge Watch will resume tomorrow, hopefully Speck will take flight at a reasonable time.

Keeping Close To Home

June 24, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Today and this evening, definitely two juvenile peregrine falcons continue to stay close to the nest  and the surrounding area. Late this afternoon in the shade of the building, two are seen on the the corner roof of  120 Adelaide.

Adults are seen on occassion in the direct area, but are probably tending to the other two who  have not been in the direct area for a couple of days. Just waiting for  them all to return to the nest ledge for a reunion. Keep your eyes to the sky.

A day in the life…

June 24, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Jan Chudy Reports:

Checking in at 8:40, an adult was on the Sheraton nest ledge, two juveniles were on the west side of the Thompson building, and one was on the NE corner of 390 Bay with food, and was doing a lot of flapping.  At 9 a.m. an adult was on the Sheraton nest ledge and a second was on the NE corner of the air handling unit of 120 Adelaide and the three juvies were in the same spot as earlier.  At 3:10 p.m. one juvenile was on the east side of the Sheraton roof and an adult was feeding two juveniles on the NW corner of 390 Bay.  Between 3:40 and 4:55 two juveniles remained on the east side of the Sherton roof.

!!! The watchers watching the watched?

June 22, 2009 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Mark Nash Reports:

Just one of the many days at the Burlington Lift  Bridge with all hands present, (and this day actually had some sun included)!  While very organized, there were many eyes to the sky documenting almost every minute of the young peregrines activity.  I must say that these little peregrines must be the most photographed stars in southern Ontario!

A small collection of some of the incredible folks that came out to help and stand by their peregrines!

Another Successful Year - with a twist.

June 02, 2009 - Mississauga - Holcim

CPF Postmaster Reports:

While the St. Lawrence pair have yet again eluded us and concealed the brunt of their activities, we have some good news to report never the less.  The  identified adult pair have once been successful in producing at least two offspring again this year, and as John and Armando report, the two hatchlings are ready to fly!  As reports came in from John from a far while working in the area, Armando was trying to get a ariel photo from above the nesting roof high up atop of the tower.  Both report that the activity was far from being still, as two very healthy hatchlings in full juvenile plumage were now being observed flapping their wings on the leading edges of the building high above the activity at the plant.

I have attached a photo to give you an idea as to the nest nest (or should I say the nest roof area) and the upper roof area that Armando needs to get to that would allow him a sneak-peek of the nest.  Its a long way down!

To the best of our knowledge, both juvenileshave now since  fledged successfuly.  Sadly, their sex is unknown, and they were not able to be banded due to their advanced age.

!!! Majesty is still in Flint Mich., USA and doing well!

June 06, 2009 - International, National and Local News

Mark Nash Reports:
Hi Mark,
Kariann  asked me to send you some of my photos of Majesty.  I am a DNR volunteer who has worked with Kariann and monitored the Whittier Building site where your Miriam has been nesting for the last 5 years.  It is always so exciting to hear the stories and histories of our Peregrine Falcons.  Thanks for all of your help!

!!! Sad news from London Ontario - Dead falcon found!

June 16, 2009 - London - TD Tower

CPF Postmaster Reports:

While a little late in our reporting due to the huge back log we’re dealing with at this time of year, we have received some sad news from the London area.  Hance, a building engeneer  has reported finding a dead falcon in one of the rooftop cooling pools from a building top down on Wellington Street.  He was kind enough to send us a couple of photos. While we had originally believed that it may have been a peregrine falcon given that it was banded with a Silver USFW band, a closer insoection of the photos, it is obvious that the bird in the photos is not Peregrine falcon, but likly an Amerian Kestrel.   It is banded on the right leg…#1523-84675

!!! Satellite Tagged Peregrine Spotted again here in Ontario. Its Quest from Rochester N.Y.!

June 08, 2009 - International, National and Local News

Mark Nash Reports:

Just received some interesting news from Bill and Elizabeth who spotted a Pefa in Wesleyville yesterday equipped with a satellite transmitter.  It must be Quest from Rochester N.Y.  I just happen to know something about this wayward Pefa, as I was down in Rochester N.Y. just about this time last year deploying this satellite transmitter on this young peregrine with Mike from the New  York D.E.C.

Fledge Watch - Day 17

June 23, 2009 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

I arrived downtown about 5:35 this morning.  Jorgen arrived a few minutes later.  We didn’t see Nihei at first and went around to look for a bit.  Then we did see her, still clinging to the window ledge!  She seemed to sleep a bit, then look around.  Connor flew past her to land on a sensor on the side of Tower C, then back in front of her, but she wouldn’t fly yet.  I had to leave, but Jorgen stayed, good thing.  After 9am she left the hotel and flew over Queen St.  She tried to get on a couple of buildings like the Podium but missed her mark.  Her flight was ok, and so was her landing, on the ground.  He went to her, gathered her up in a towel and took her back up to the roof of Tower 1 in the box while the others on shift waited below.

Back on the roof, she did little for a long time.  She was fed close to 11 by Diana who then went to feed Tailer.  He has been a whiz at flying, and seems to really enjoy his wings.  He showed us how easy it is for him to land up on the antenna of Tower C!

The adults did more incentive flying, still not working. She beetled from one end to the other once in a while, causing the volunteers to move from location to location, just in case she would suddenly fly.  What a game.  When we left tonight, she was on the west, south west area of the hotel.  We left Anouk still watching, just in case.  She was to leave when it got too dark to see.  I hope she got home before it was time to get up……..

The morning shift may have to look for Nihei should she decide to try her wings again.  She did not seem to want to settle down for the night!
