June 17, 2008 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel
Sarah Washington Reports:
Last night Miles decided that he would take some little flights in the area between buildings to get more comfortable with his wings. Then at bedtime all 3 could be seen right at the camera all squished together looking right over at their brother, almost as if to say “please come back and play”..and that is what Miles did. He went to be with his siblings for a short time. Then this morning he went off early again and has been making little flights. He is quite impressive.
On the hotel, 2 workers came out on the roof and Madame X went over to tell them off! She dive bombed them and then they quickly went back inside. Keep in mind there is a sign that advised against this because of that reason so they were asking for it!
More to come!

June 16, 2008 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre
CPF Volunteer Reports:
Trying to report all of the wonderful flights I saw would confuse me to no end,so each of the 3 young Peregrines made flights of varying lengths and durations. Sunny and Screech seem to be doing better then Perry. Some flights were building to building, others were long flights doing laps of buildings with the adults. It made my portion of the watch very easy though sometimes nerve racking. Kathy joined me during several of these flights and a serious hail storm before rain dominated.
At 7:30pm the adult female chased 2 pigeons between the condos. The pigeon zigged when it should have zagged and bounced off. The female Peregrine caught it on the rebound. Dinner was later served. When Mark and I left at about 10pm,Screech was on the first condo,Perry was on the roof of the nest building and Sunny was on the nest ledge beside the camera. So far so good the Sun Life Flying Team is doing a great job.

CPF Volunteer Reports:
I arrived earlier than usual in response to Frank’s request of the previous evening. I did not observe any bird on the condo, (ledge or otherwise); and panning my flashlight around the base level shrubbery, concrete walls and patio area revealed nothing either. The parents seemed very calm so I assumed the bird in question had made way back up to roof and this was confirmed at 6:15 a.m. when the female parent was observed feeding all three juveniles on the roof above nest ledge. Little activity after that until about 7:20 a.m. when the male started vocalizing and flying around the roof top. This quickly aroused the juveniles and soon they and parents were circling the building but after a lap or so they all disappeared behind the building. A walkabout along Abefoyle revealed one fledgling on the top of the most easterly condominium and another on the roof of the nest building. I am assuming the third fledgling was also on the nest building because the parents returned to their favourite observation posts and appeared to be very calm. When Frank arrived to take over all seemed to be ‘quiet on the western front’.

June 16, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
Frequent checks early this morning, I found one on the ledge and one on the lower Adelaide St. building.
Jan called around noon to tell me, that she had gone around the Sheraton site and found the missing fledgling. It is very low on a rooftop on the south side of Richmond St, south of the Hotel. Way to go Jan, for finding her.
Jan spent her lunch time watching this little one, while I tried to tie up ends at King St. and make my way over here. I stayed until 9:30p.m. and the little one did some flapping, running of the area, but mostly investigating the area and looking for a way out.
While watching her, I heard a lot of screaming from gulls. It brought my attention to the intersection of York and Richmond Sts. Gulls were diving at a peregrine fledgling!
Another one low. I don’t know which one fledged first or who is whom. The youngest is still on the ledge.
So with one bird very low and the other needing observing, I had all evening to sit and “observe”. The two did nothing. The adults did do some running of gulls and I was sure to get the “heck out of the way” so I am not mistaken for a “predator” again. I hid under the overhang across the street.
Every thing seems to be normal at the Sheraton for this stage of the fledge watch. Pictures to come. Thanks Jan for all your help here. Your the best!

Sarah Washington Reports:
Wow! Where do I begin? Yesterday Elstone (who we believe is a boy) took his first flight. It was quite short and he landed in a very awkward spot but he was rescued and placed back on top the roof of the Sheraton Hotel. He was just fine from what our helpers told us. He stayed as close to the nest as he could to stay by his siblings and they looked on at him as well. He stayed over night right by the camera arm which is right into the nest.
**June 16th**
This morning Elstone did a very small flight back into the nest to be with his siblings. It was like they were all having a mini reunion and Elstone was telling them all about his day and the strange people in orange vests.
Then just after 8a, Miles went for his first flight. No warning…off he went. GREAT flight. Great altitude and landing. He is now on top of the roof of the Sheraton checking things out!
The fun really has begun!
Stay tuned for more news!

Linda Woods Reports:
Lots of action at the King St. site today. Dougal continues to fly very well, his sister has finally made it off the King Edward Hotel and was found early this morning on the Mercatto buidling on Court St. Later in the morning, both Dougal and his sister Gwenny were seen feeding on #1 Toronto.
Third juvie has fledged but at this time is unaccounted for. Probably down on a roof top and out of view. Thanks Harry, Zoe, Lorne, Paul, and Toshiko and Jan for your help today and always.
Around 11:30 today at lot of commotion around King and Victoria Sts. Both adults were vocalizing very loud. I looked towards all the noise and saw both adults very low at the intersection running off a Turkey Vulture. The adults made contact with the TV just outside Tim Horton’s. The TV than turned northward as the peregrines were forcing it out of the air. It flew very low ( about I story above the road).
I went over to see if they actually forced the vulture to the road. It had landed on a second story ledge near Adelaide and Victoria St.While I struggled to find my camera for movie shots, the peregrines continued to force the bird off the ledge by the continued stooping. When I looked back to take the picture the TV was gone and so were the peregrines. Absolutely incrediable to see that in downtown Toronto.

CPF Volunteer Reports:
Today was not the most eventful day,but thats not a bad thing. Each of the 3 young Peregrines made a few flights today. Most were shortish ones between the 2 condo towers and the Sun Life Centre. At least 2 feedings were observed. One of the female chicks..I believe it was Screech took a good flight to the first tower of the Centre, before spending the nite on a window ledge of the first condo. Diana will be there bright and early to keep an eye on her. Perry made a few short flights today, his first since his release yesterday. He was atop the nest building when we left. Sunny was atop the first condo when we left at 10pm. Joan Boardman and friends were by today, before the ugly weather started. Mark brought a canopy for us to have shelter from the sun..it sure came in handy to hide from the huge thunderstorms for Kathy,Renee and myself in the early afternoon and Marion and I later in the day. We even had hail! All of the Falcons weathered the storms fine.

June 15, 2008 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:
Well, there hasn’t been much change in movement at the 18 King St. site, Dougal has been doing great flights, he has even made it to the top of Dundee Place, knocked an adult off the top of 18 King and continues to impress us with his advancing flight skills.
His sister, Gwenny who was identified today has finally moved from her perch at the south portion of the King Edward roof, to the north portion. Toshiko stated that she was in the area late last evening and took one last look and found her on the north west section.
This morning Gwenny had made her to the north side of the hotel,in the area above the front entrance. This is where she stayed all day, endured a few more heavy rains and thunderstorms.
Ely has had a few more flapping episodes and is becoming more curious as to what her siblings are doing. This may encourage her to take flight, perhaps in the next day or so.
This evening the watch was called early at some of the sites due to heavy thunderstoms and blowing rain. Too risky for volunteers to be out in this type of weather with umbrellas or under trees.

June 15, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
As Jan has reported, The Sheraton has had it’s first fledge.
I made frequent checks on Belle who continued to dance around the roof of the “lower Adelaide St. building. When I first found her, she was on the railing of the cooling towers, later she had moved herself under the large pipes. She was probably trying to get out of the rain. I quick check on the ledge and I could only see the youngest bird, with still a lot of down on it.
The second bird was not in view. The first check I assumed it may be in behind the Osler camera. The second physical check on the ledge, I saw Tiago in the nest box. and one juvie sacked out behind the Olser camera. Rhea Mae was on the taller Adelaide St building. I’m not sure but I think perhaps that the high winds may have blown a juvie into an unintentional flight. Not that it was premature, just not intended for that time. Only seeing one juvie twice had me concerned.
Scanning the roof tops and various ledges in the area and trying to track the direction Rhea was facing, I did not see anything. More storms on the horizon, and I could not stay in upper area any longer. I made my way back to King St. to let Zoe go home before the heavy storms arrived.
From about 6:30 p.m and on thunderstorms were rolling in back to back and by 8:00p.m. heavy wind and rain with frequent lightning made it impossible to monitor the nest sites. The watch was called at approximately 8:15p.m.
Will start again tomorrow.

June 15, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
CPF Volunteer Reports:
Arriving in my office at 9am I found one juvenile on the standpipe and one running behind the nest box. A scan of the surroundings found an adult on the NW corner of 130 Adelaide. A scan of lower roofs found an adult on the railing of the air handling unit at 120 Adelaide, which is substantially lower than 130 and on a direct SE diagonal line from the nest ledge. Scanning slightly to the left, I found the first Sheraton fledge, one railing below and slightly west of the adult. She kindly stretched her leg as I got the scope on her and the red with yellow tape was clear to see - Belle had fledged!! I observed her until 12:30. The adult stayed for some time and then left. Belle explored all around, up and down on the railing and even sat on the fan housing! As time passed, she became more active. Lots of flapping and hopping around, but no flight. During this time I also noted two feedings on the nest ledge. At one point one adult passed low over Belle but she stayed put. Finally at noon, with much flapping she “flew” slightly to the south over more equipment housings. The adult who had been on 130 Adelaide immediately swooped down and landed on the west side of the roof. Belle’s “flight’ was brief and had no altitude. She then came down on to the roof proper and spent the next 25 minutes running and flapping back and forth on the roof to no avail in view of the adult. Absolutely no elevation. The adult took off and flew lazy circles around with the second adult. As I left at 12:30 Belle was walking under the piping on the roof.
