Returning in the Evenings

June 29, 2008 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Frequent scans outside my livingroom window rarely have I seen any of the juvies in the evening. Only when I walk past the King St. site, I might spot one or two of the young ones.

Tonight, a quick look out my window and I spotted all three, plus one of the adults.

Two were originally on the north-east corner of the KEH. The two then flew over to the St.James spire where a third came into view. All three sat on the spire for a few minutes, then at least one took off and headed west towards the nest building, and out of my sight. All flying very well and continue to stay together.
One adult remained on Dundee Place while the three juvies flew in the area.

Sarah Washington Reports:

Well, I am sad to say that the last day of the Hamilton Nest Site watch has now come to a close. All 3 chicks have been flying so well, and we are all so proud of them. They are venturing away from our view and therefore we have to trust in their abilities. Miles is still at the Rehab Facility. He has been placed into a flight pen to see how he is flying. We are not sure when he will be back but hopefully soon.

This has been a great year for all sites and I want to Thank Each and every person that has taken the time to help and watch these beautiful birds.

I will touch base once I hear more on Miles.

Take care

Linda Woods Reports:

While resetting the webcamera, I took this opportunity to take a quick peek in the nest tray, and look who I found, Lily our little hitch hiker. Glad to see she is maintaining height. I didn’t see any of the others. They are all probably down in the shade today.

Lily has made it back!

June 26, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Checking in on the Sheraton nest ledge around 2:15p.m. today, I found two juveniles in the shade at the far east end of the nest ledge. It’s Belle, and Lily! Lily finally made it back to the ledge and is sitting way in the back out of the sun, while Belle sits on the Osler camera frame. A walk around the hotel on ground level, and I found Unity on the Sheraton sign sitting on the first “e” of Centre.

The trio continues to improve their flying skills everyday and are maintaining height.

I didn’t see Rhea Mae or Tiago this afternoon.

Soon…

June 25, 2008 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Sarah Washington Reports:

Well Miles had a good prognosis. He only has some muscle pain but the x ray showed no significant issues and he should be placed back in the nest soon. This is happy news! He is being given bird advil so to speak, and he should be home to the ledge soon.

The other 3 are becoming more and more confident in their flying skills. The other night all 3 were playing tag and talon touching. It was awesome to see. They are doing really well.

Bell a natural

June 25, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Arrived early this morning to do a head count. It was too long before I had one juvenile on the north side of the Hilton, one on the east side of the Hilton, and one juvie on the midsection south side of 130 Adelaide. Rhea Mae was in the nest box and Tiago was on the Hilton Logo.

This afternoon around 2p.m. Rhea Mae was on the nest ledge, on Juvie was on the north side of the 120 Adelaide, one juvie was on the “e” and the third juvie was on the roof top. Tiago was not in view.

Jan has reported that one of the juvie’s appears to be having difficulties in her mobility. She is getting from roof top to roof top, but she is really not all that active, unlike her older sister, who appears more and more like an adult.

Two or Three?

June 24, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

A quick head count today, and I found all three. They seem to be staying south of the hotel. This morning I found Belle on the ledge, one on the south side of the Hilton and the third up on DBRS Top signage. This evening I found two of the juvies on the north side of the Hilton above the logo.

Jan had sightings throughout the day, but only had two in view. She did not see a third. Harry was out and only saw one.

I think Belle is spending a lot of time on her own or with the adults. Perhaps tomorrow morning all three will be seen again.

!!! I spoke to soon…

June 23, 2008 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Sarah Washington Reports:

After we were discussing how well the chicks were doing, one went missing. After looking, one of the falconwatchers in the area off duty, noticed Miles on a very low railing. He then tried to fly and ended up having to be rescued. He is now at a local hospital that takes care of Avaian Injurys. It is quite sad. We are praying for a quick recovery. He has a bump on his bottom but he does seem quite alert.

Keep him in your thoughts…

All in view

June 23, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

I approached the Sheraton site from the south along Front, King St. in order to get a far sight line on to the south side of the buildings. I saw only one juvie on the south side of 130 Adelaide Mid section. I made my way over to University Ave and checked on the area where I had last seen Lily, the evening before. I did see tail feather hanging over the edge.

Viewing from the upper levels of the Sheraton I could see one juvie on the medsection of 130, and one on the cooling tower of 120 Adelaide. Jan later called and confirmed what I had been seeing. We both feel that perhaps one of the two ( Lily or Unity,) may be limping. And that is a possibility with the wall bounces these two have been doing.

Lily is finally back on this side of York Street and has joined her two sisters.

Belle continues to play the mentoring role of teacher, instructor. She continues to show flying skills to the other two. Jan had also seen what I saw yesterday. Belle trying to encourage her sister to fly with her.

Late afternoon, before the rain started I had seen one juvie fly to the roof of the Exchange Tower.

One juvie on 120 took off and flew in behind 130 tower and out of my view. A second band of rain and possible thunderstorms are headed this way.

The birds are learning quickly from thier encouraging sister.

The official day long watch is over, but daily spot monitoring is still required for a few more days or so.
Belle is doing wonderful. Lily our little stow-a-way, and Unity are a little behind Belle, but with her encouragement I am sure they will catch up very quickly.

They will continue to be in the direct area and the juvies attempting to return to the nest ledge. The adults are still using the nest ledge as a look out point.

Linda.
