!!! At Least One Egg For London!!

May 04, 2012 - London - TD Tower

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Today Frank and I were in London again for the day and were treated to a day of falcon watching on Wellington in between delivering Project School Visit in the area. To get an idea of just what the pair were attending to in the nest tray, I visited 1 London Place for a better view. Although the angle still didn’t allow me to see right into the depths of the tray, it was clear that during the hour that I watched the female in incubation position that there had to at least be one egg. At the close of my observation hour from the higher elevation, the female stood up, looked down intently at something in front of her and then gently with her beak she turned it before settling back down. During the turning, I was able to see the top of the egg as it rolled to the right and she adjusted down on top of it. Excellent news for London!! Congratulations to all!! Check back tomorrow for the full story on the amazing day in London and more pictures!

!!! Maybe a hatch?????

May 04, 2012 - Niagara Falls

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Friday May 4th - 2012
A couple of roger’s shots from this morning. The first shot shows one of the pefas high atop a building next to the casino. The second shot shows a pefa oddly at back of aerie, but something white where the eggs are. There was a lot of mist in the gorge this morning after that really heavy rain that went through Ontario and NY yesterday. This weekend is forecast to be sunny so maybe we’ll get a better look!
We ran into Jacquie at the gorge this morning!

!!! Three chicks confirmed

May 04, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

After our excitement yesterday we were back there again today and we now have three fuzzy white heads. We were there to see three feedings take place. Freddie and Voltaire seem much more relaxed this year than other years. The new nest tray is working out great thanks to the CPF. Also we want to Thank the Ambassador Bridge Company for all of their help. We will report more as the days go by. If you know of anyone who would like to help us watch the babies please send us an email at wpfw2012@gmail.com
All you need is a good heart and a love of nature.

!!! Great Day in London; Resident Male Identified!!

May 03, 2012 - London - TD Tower

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Today Frank and I were out in London visiting the resident pair and delivering Project School Visit to two great schools.  After our first school, we made our way down to Wellington St. where we could see the female sitting on the edge of the nest tray.  Once we got into position on Wellington, we noticed that the female had left our sight and the male was now on the ledge.  The male remained in full view giving us ample opportunity to see his band number in good light.  The male’s recovery band is solid black 16 over V and he is Dougal hatched in 2008 at the 18 King St E nest site.  Later in the afternoon, Frank witnessed a third peregrine entering the territory.  A subadult female had flown over towards the nest building and Dougal went out and met her in the air.  He stooped and contacted with her a few times and there was also a talon lock before he escorted her out of the area.  The entire time that the battle was going on, the resident female stayed on the tray out of sight.  With the interloper gone, Dougal returned and the pair spent the afternoon in and out of the nest ledge and taking time out to mate twice.  It was a rare moment to see the pair together as the tray was rarely left unattended.  We have yet to determine if there are any eggs in the tray and how many but that news will be coming very shortly.  We did get a few looks at the legs of the female and have confirmed our earlier observations that she has a Black over Red recovery band on her left leg and a silver USFW band on her right.  We will hopefully identify her shortly and finally put a name to a face!!

!!! Yahoo!!!!! We have a hatch!!! April 30th.

May 03, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Well, we have had some exciting two days of observing Voltaire and Freddie. This evening we watched her fly out of the nest and came back on to the abudment with a kill, she did a great job in cleaning it and then flew back into the nest with Freddie guarding her. We didn’t know what was going on at first until we saw two (2) little white heads while she was feeding them. At this time we are not sure if there are more than two but we will keep you posted on what we see. It is so good to see little white heads in the nest tray.

In The Fog

May 03, 2012 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Sue McCreadie Reports:

Bill and I just returned from a visit at the Lift Bridge.  Unfortunately, the fog was so thick that we couldn’t even see the nest box, let alone any little white heads.

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Good morning everyone,
(Thursday) May 3, 2012 — (7:05-7:25 a.m.)
It takes two to watch a home/nest. As I walk up Lyon Street I can see Connor’s sleek silhouette on the NW corner of the Delta Ottawa City Centre hotel rooftop. I walk over to Albert Street in the hopes that Diana might be perched on the east side. I’m about to head up Kent Street when Diana comes in from the north and lands on the SW corner of the hotel rooftop. She “walks” inside the rooftop then comes back to her perch. I backtrack and find that Connor has left the rooftop. I observe Diana preening on another overcast morning in Ottawa. She appears to be settled in for awhile as I head to work.
Take care,
N. McKenna
