!!! Another pair in Ottawa or a failed nest?

June 08, 2011 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Hello CPF,

I was able to get a couple of shots of one of the falcons that is a regular at our building. These photos were taken yesterday around 6pm. One or both birds are usually on the building everyday at this time. I am looking to borrow a zoom lens in order to get a better quality shot.
Thanks
Donna

Doesn’t appear to be a hatch as yet.

Timing in life is everything and in my experience falcon watching is often pure luck! I was walking up Lyon Street towards the Delta Ottawa City Centre this morning in the hopes of catching a glimpse of our falcon family. I searched every rooftop including the Delta Ottawa rooftop and came up empty-handed. As I was crossing the street I looked up just in time to see Connor and Diana head back from the south/east of the city above Constitution Square. One falcon briefly landed on the SW corner of the Delta Ottawa rooftop and then headed inside the nest area. The other adult landed inside the rooftop and settled on the ledge above the third window from the SW corner. I could hear strong vocalizing coming from above. I did not see any food in their talons when they flew unto the rooftop and they both remained at their posts when I left a few minutes later.
Take care and keep smiling!

I have not had the pleasure of catching a glimpse of Connor or Diana today but I did look up in time to see a large blue heron as it flew right above Lyon Street. It was heading towards the Ottawa River. A variety of birds were taking advantage of the air currents and could be observed floating above the Supreme Court of Canada and beyond towards the Ottawa River on this breezy yet humid afternoon.

Take care and keep smiling!

Hello everyone, It is a sunny and breezy afternoon in Ottawa. I look up towards the Delta Ottawa City Centre and see an adult falcon perched a foot from the NE corner of the hotel. It is looking towards the south of the city and cuts quite a regal figure high atop its urban cliff.
Take care and keep smiling!

!!! A second pair or a hangout?

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 7 to 9th - 2011
A big thank you to John for sending in these photos of the peregrines that he’s been seeing on a very regular basis these days from his office.
We’re all interested to see if this is a second pair of peregrines in Ottawa, or just a hang-out of the Delta pair?
Stay tuned……

Everyone watching!

Good Morning!
Looking out my office window, (Albert Street) watching one of the falcons perched on the ledge of the Delta. He/she has spent the last couple of days in the same spot. Seems to be enjoying breakfast at the moment.
Such a beautiful site!!

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 7, 2011 — 12:10 p.m. — I was in front of the Delta Ottawa City Centre hotel when I heard strong vocalizing coming from the rooftop. I was across the street and could not find any adult falcon within my field of vision. I’m quite certain that an adult falcon was in the nest area. I looked up towards the Minto Place Suite Hotel and saw the same trio of Turkey Vultures that I’ve seen twice before soaring above the Minto buildings. The urgent cries kept coming for a few minutes until the vultures disappeared from sight. I searched the surrounding area to see if any windows were being washed nearby or if anything else could be upsetting the peregrine falcon but came up empty-handed.
12:55 p.m. — I came back to see if anything was amiss on the rooftop and all was quiet until I reached the hotel and heard the now familiar vocalizing of the peregrine falcon. By the time I crossed the street the falcon was silent once again.
Take care and keep smiling!

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Friday, June 3, 2011 — 7:35 a.m. — The Delta Ottawa City Centre rooftop was a busy place this morning. I observed an adult falcon perched on the SW corner of the rooftop for about 5 minutes. It then took to the skies to land on the NW corner. Within moments it took off again and headed towards Place de Ville Tower C. It was ¾ of the way up the building hovering by the window as if someone had been disturbing it. From my vantage point at street level I could not see what was happening inside the building but someone must have been disturbing the falcon. After vocalizing its message loud and clear it headed back and hovered near the nest area and then took off towards the SE corner of the rooftop where it remained when I left at 7:50 a.m.

Friday, June 3, 2011 — 12:20 p.m. — I was across the street from the Delta Ottawa City Centre and looked up to see an adult falcon on the SW corner of the hotel rooftop. It was keeping watch towards the east of the downtown core.

12:25 p.m. — The other adult (I assume that it was Diana.) hopped onto the NW corner from inside the rooftop and was observed stretching her wings. She was vocalizing loudly for a good two minutes and was observed looking towards the nest area. The adult male wisely remained on the SW corner during this period.

Enjoy your weekend! Take care and keep smiling!
