A Posting I Missed; Emmalina Rescued Again June 20th

July 01, 2012 - Mississauga - Holcim

Tracy Simpson Reports:

First let me apologize for missing this most important posting.  Between working and the 7 different watch sites over the last 32 days I have been attending, this one I was sure I posted by sadly and embarrasingly was missed.  My most sincere apologies folks.

On June 20th, Mark Nash received a call from Holcim Cement from a gentleman, Mark, who works at the plant who told us that Emmalina had once again come down to the ground.  This time she landed right in front of staff and after a moment or two, began walking towards them.  Her eyes were watering and it would appear that she had gotten into something.  Mark and Armando immediately rescued her and after closer inspection, noticed that she had dust all over her face and in her nares.  The two jumped to action and began washing her face and eyes with saline solution and then flushing very well with water.  Once cleaned up, she was placed in a rescue carrier, left with security and the call was placed.

Mark Nash called me and asked if I could go out and take a look at Emmalina and ascertain whether she was in need of medical attention.  I dashed out of work and arrived at the site at approximately 5:30pm and went in to take a look at the young bird.  When I initially lifted up the towel on the carrier, she hissed and lashed out as a healthy peregrine does but on further examination, her eyes were still watering from her contact with the dust and we decided to take her to Toronto Wildlife Centre for evaluation by their vet.  When she arrived at TWC, she was once again washed and treated for dust and throughly examined.  The dust that she had made contact with had caused a chemical-like burn to the soft tissues of her eyes, nasal cavities, mouth and throat.  She was hydrated and today remains at the TWC under close watch as she heals from her latest adventure.  We will keep you informed as to her progress as the updates come in.

!!! Rescued fledgling banded and released!

Hi Mark,

Here is a little update on the situation here at Holcim. The rescued chick by Mark has been banded by MNR and released. We have named her Emmalina, and she wears Black band number S over 15.. She is extremely feisty and upon release she flew well, and gained altitude very well I thought. I am sending a couple of pics including an observation I made that showed that the parents Caspian and Storm have discovered the old nest-box that you made for Nate and his mate on the west side Silos. Perhaps they will choose the box next year.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Fledgling Rescue at Holcim

June 15, 2012 - Mississauga - Holcim

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Mark Nash received a phone call this evening that a juvenile peregrine falcon was down on the ground in the Holcim plant area.  A worker at the site, also named Mark, was coached on how to do a rescue and what to do next and he did an awesome job at it!!  Bird in box, he called back to share the success of his rescue with us and I was called by Mark Nash to attend the site and check the bird out.  When I arrived and took at look in the rescue carrier, I was greeted with a whole lotta hissing and puffing up.  This chick looked furious.  I took the bird out and transferred it to a larger rescue box and throughout the whole move, the bird lashed out with talons, bit out at me like a little rattlesnake and yelled its displeasure.  The young one had lots of energy and major attitude, nice pink mouth, holding both wings up, eyes bright, excellent balance and standing at attention.  This chick looked absolutely fine except for a few ruffed feathers on the left wing.  Regardless of that, the bird was alert and at the ready.  I left the bird in the capable hands of security and returned to check back on the little one before heading home.  The OMNR were called to visit the site and band the young one as we were not able to get these chicks banded this year due to time conflicts.  The chicks need to be banded ideally between 18 and 24 days and the rock climber needed for this site was not available during that crucial window of time.  The plan is to band the young should they come to the ground and it looks like we have our first.  Check back for an update on the little one’s info!!

A Quick Check at Holcim

June 02, 2012 - Mississauga - Holcim

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce Massey was on site at the Holcim nest checking in on Storm, Caspian and their four little ones. In the time that Bruce was there he was able to observe that the wee family has become much more moblie and is none the worse for wear after the rainy Friday that we just experienced. Three of the chicks were visible at the edge of the nest ledge and one of the adults was perched on a stair railing on the building. We look forward to watching the young ones taking their first flights soon!!

Holcim Visit; The Kids are Still Out of View

May 22, 2012 - Mississauga - Holcim

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce Massey was down at the Holcim nest site this morning for a quick chick check and was treated to a nice view of Storm as he sat on the edge of the nest ledge watching over his young brood of 4.  He sat there for about 20 minutes before taking off on a hunt and Caspian was not in view.  The chicks are more mobile but are not yet ready to approach the edge of the nest ledge yet.  We look forward to the days in which their little faces make their first appearance!!

Hi everyone,
We have a hatch in progress! So far we have 3 hatchlings out of their little shell :-) it is now 11:30 am Friday May, 5, 2012. We know that at least one was hatched before 6:30 am when we setup the camera, but hopefully the others happened after that, and we will have it on video.

Hello everyone,
I would like to announce that, with Rob Paolucci’s help,(he brought in a nice camcorder) which we set up over our observation hole we have finally got the full picture of what we have on the nest ledge. We took 5.5 hours of raw video and finally we able to catch a change of shift and thus exposure to what is in the nest bowl. We have 4 eggs, and as of 3:00pm today May 2, 2012 none are hatched. I am forwarding a screen shot only.. at this time until we can convert and compress video for viewing.

So yeah!!!!!! we have our count, and many thanks to Rob Paolucci for the help.
