December 17, 2010 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel
Frank Butson Reports:
Thanks to Iain Fleming for his great photos of Peter from the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel. See The Dec 7 report for the history of Peter and his parents. It turns out Iain had lived in Hamilton and was very familiar with the Sheraton nest and Madame X.
Reports and photos like Iain’s are very important to the ongoing monitoring of Peregrine Falcons. Please report all of your sightings and be generous with your photos.

Frank Butson Reports:
On Friday I was contacted by Iain, who sent a few photos of a juvenile,Peregrine Falcon he had seen at Tommy Thompson Park(The Leslie Street Spit),3 weeks ago. The young Peregrine had the black band with white numbers/letters 46/Y. I sent the info to Marion Nash at CPF and she got back to me with the identity of the young male. His name is Peter, and he was banded in Hamilton at the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel site in 2010. Peter was 525grams at banding. The Hamilton Peregrines are named with local figures or history in mind. This is how Peters name came to be:
St. Peter’s Infirmary was founded in 1890 with room for 14 patients. Recognized as a hospital under the Public Hospital Acts in 1931, by the 1970s St. Peter’s had grown to accommodate 284 mainly geriatric patients. Presently part of the St. Peter’s Health System, the hospital now specializes in the care of adults of all ages with chronic illness.
A little of Peter’s history:
Peter took his first flight as per below:
June 16, 2010 - At 16:20 this afternoon Peter left the Sheraton ledge and flew out over King Street. It landed a few minutes later on the adjacent Thompson building and seems just fine.
His adult Parents are known as Madame X(originally name Runaround Sue) who arrived in 2001 on site. Madame X was hatched on a bridge on Pennsylvania Route 309, the Cross-Valley Expressway in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Banded as a hatchling on 7 June 1999 she was known to the falcon watchers in Northeast PA as ‘Runaround Sue’, a name suggested after she was found running along the expressway guide wall one morning. Her Father is Surge, the resident male since 2004. Surge was hatched in Etobicoke at the Islington and Bloor site (now the Sunlife Centre) in 2002.
Information about Peter and his Mom came from the Hamilton Community Peregrine Project http://falcons.hamiltonnature.org/ . The co-ordinator there has been been given this good news about Peter and was glad to hear it.
Reports from bird watchers and photographers are very important to the ongoing monitoring of Peregrine Falcons. Please contact CPF with your observations and tell your friends to as well. Send observations/photos to postmaster@peregrine-foundation.ca or frank@peregrine-foundation.ca We will do all we can to provide information to you regarding the Peregrine you have sighted.

Sarah Washington Reports:
Chedoke took her first flight today before 8 AM. The last chick has left the Hamilton Nest site. The flight was a solid one. Although she did fly, more attention will be given to her as she is still very venerable.
Every flight that a Peregrine makes is a success. Chedoke will have to catch up with her siblings and learn the “skies” so to speak.
This is great news!

Sarah Washington Reports:
Well 3 of the chicks are now in the air at the Hamilton nest site. Henderson (female) decided it was time to leave the nest and fly with her brothers. She is doing so well, it amazes me.
They were flying around playing chase, touching talons and tag! It is almost as if you can see yourself in them from when you were a child.
We still have 1 chick left to go. We are in hopes that she / he is just delayed. The common signs of flight are there just not as intense as most chicks at this stage.

Sarah Washington Reports:
Well Peter took his first flight finally yesterday. Madame X was right with him as he did a nice strong flight. He ended up on a close building to the Sheraton Hotel, and stayed overnight.
This morning he took another small flight. This time he landed lower than Falconwatchers like, so we shall see what the day brings.
The siblings are doing lots of flapping and little flights along the ledge, they will be off soon!
Chedoke is still behind in his development. He is eating and trying out his wings…so we have our fingers crossed!

CPF Postmaster Reports:
We have received some great news from our good friends down in New York State from the N.Y.D.E.C. After banding a single hatchling that has was produced at the Grand Island Bridge nest- (on the south bridge), the resident male has been identified by his solid Black coloured marker band as being a Canadian produced bird.
We have been able to confirm after checking band records that the resident males identity is that of a male peregrine named Duncan. Duncan was produced at the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel nest site in 2008 and he was banded at 23 days old, weighing in at 666 grams (on an empty crop weight) on June 2nd / 2008.
Duncan has apparently hooked up with an unbanded female, so her identity and history is unknown.
We have asked Connie if they had any photos that they could send to us of Duncan and his new family.
Stay tuned……

Madame X has laid 4 beautiful eggs this season. She has been busy watching over them. There has been reported sightings of an immature Falcon in the area. Both Madame X and Surge have been chasing him out of the area. Who knows what this season will bring??
