!!! Gleig From Sheraton Nesting In Buffalo

June 30, 2012 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Frank Butson Reports:

As reported earlier this spring, a female Peregrine named Gleig,  hatched in 2009 at the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel has nested in Buffalo NY.  Gleig has had 2 chicks. They were banded on June 23rd in Buffalo at the Central Terminal nest.  The chicks were both female and named Wagner and Alfreda respectively.

The excellent photos from Vicki are of the nest building, both adults and one of the young.  This is great news, as this adds to the legacy of Madame X and Surge.

We appologize for the delay in posting, all available CPF staff have been busy in the field.

Second Rochester, New York Female is Pigott!!

May 10, 2012 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Tracy Simpson Reports:

For weeks now there has been a sub-adult female hanging around in Rochester, New York looking to nest on a building on Brighton Street not far from the territory held by Beauty.  The ladies in Rochester have had a tumultuous year to say the least with Beauty being injured and off to rehab, then Unity taking over her nest box with Archer, then Archer looked injured but stayed high and then disappearing.  Along comes Dot.ca from Etobicoke Sun Life nest site and pairs with Unity who is sadly hit by a car and doesn’t survive.  Beauty was released from rehab and returned to her nest box to find Dot.ca who is now trying to run her out of town and at the same time mating with a sub-adult on Brighton Street.  Phew!!

With all things now stabilized, Beauty and Dot.ca have paired and mated but he has continued to mate with the other sub-adult female.  Just like his dad Jack!!  The Rochester ladies, now that they have had a calm moment, set their sights on identifying this new female and with photos taken just recently, the solid black recovery band marked 43 over X could be seen and coupled with the red and green tape on her USFW band that match our records, we can now introduce you to Pigott as the mystery lady on Brighton Street.  Pigott and Dot.ca continue to be seen together and it is unsure whether they will produce any young this year but it does look like she’s there to stay.  Congratulations Madame X and Surge and of course the Rochester Gang!!

A big thanks must go out to Joyce, Carol, Mak, Dana, and Kathy for all of their incredible tenacity and work to get the band number on Pigott.  You ladies are awesome!!  Photos to come!!

!!! Banding date has been secured.

May 10, 2012 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

CPF Postmaster Reports:

We are delighted to report that a banding date has been tentatively set for May 31st which would put the oldest hatchling at 27 days old. John (the rock climber) will finally be back from vacation in the USA and will be available to do the extraction for the banding.
Stay tuned……..

May 4th chick number one showed signs of hatching at The Hamilton Sheraton Hotel.  A broken egg shell was the evidence. On May 5th, 2 more chicks broke on through to the other side as they hatched within hours of each other. Congratulations to the Hamilton folks and of course Madame X and Surge. Keep checking for news about the 4th egg!

CPF Postmaster Reports:

A big thank you to Jacquie and Mike for getting an ID on their newest peregrine family,, as we have been able to confrim after checking our database that the new resident adult female is non other than “Gleig”, a young peregrine produced in 2009 at the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel nest site. Gleig was banded on June 2nd in 2009 at approx. 28 days old, weighing in at 1049 grams.

Jacquie writes:
It seems our non-banded Peregrine pair at the Buffalo Central Terminal has been replaced with a banded pair this year. Yesterday Mike and I went up to the nest box to check for eggs. There were no eggs in the scrape yet (our only nest without any eggs), but we were able to get a clear view of the female’s leg bands when she landed on the ledge of the box. (I am assuming it is the female, because she was rather large.) She had a silver USFWS band on the right leg and Black/Black 33/X on the left. She is an adult bird, without any lingering brown plumage that we could see.

Happy Peregrine season!
Jacquie
