Wednesday June 18th at Etobicoke Sun Life

June 18, 2014 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

The watch on Wednesday morning began with Kathy and Rob watching Sunni and Pierre getting their wings together.  Pierre was flying fairly well from building to building and Sunni was doing some superstar flights around the towers and back again.  Skyla had now popped up on the roof top of the nest building and was eager to make her way over to join her brothers on the west tower.  She took flight in the morning and Kathy and Rob could already see that she was too low shortly after she was airborne.  She flumped into the windows on the west tower, quickly recovered and then headed back towards the nest building.  She flew towards the building, losing altitude as she went and landed on the concrete at about the 7th floor level where she practiced some more `bat girl` moves.  She let go of the concrete and flew across towards the Islington subway station landing on the condos on the southwest corner at about 3 floors above the street.  There she sat on the outside of a glass balcony but she didn`t stay long.  She took off and flew directly south low over the treetops and out of range.  Rob headed over to his truck that was parked at Eagle Road with the intention of driving the southern neighbourhood looking for Skyla when all of a sudden the crows went crazy in a huge maple tree just south of where he was parked.  He went over to investigate and he found Skyla sitting on a branch of the tree near to the trunk about 20 feet up.  She was upset about the crows and nervous about her new found perch but vigilantly hung on.  O`Connor responded to the crows attacking her daughter with alarm calling and swooping so we knew that she was aware of where Skyla was.  Kathy and Rob moved positions and they set themselves up to watch Skyla while at the same time keep their eyes on Pierre and Sunni.  The boys for the rest of the day made mostly short flights to all three buildings and decided to camp out on the west tower for the night.  Skyla was still in the tree when I arrived and met up with Jim and Kathy and we continue to wait for her to extract herself.  Given that she was quite deep into the tree there was a good chance that she was going to come down after her first flight out of it.  We stayed until dark and she never moved so we closed down the watch for the night with Sunni and Pierre on the west tower and Skyla in the big old maple tree on Eagle Road.

Thank you so much to everyone who supported the watch today including Kathy, Baylie, Rob, Jim, Jim and Lynda and the members of the community that came out to check on the birds.  Tomorrow should be interesting as Skyla makes her way out of her tree and on to her next adventure.
