Mark Nash Reports:
July 19th - 2012
On scene and set up by 6am, with Jr. still on the Caroline street 5th floor elevation exactly where we left him last night at darkness. With the smaller local avian population still very much not amused with their new neighbour, Caster dropped in with food for the young fledgling, followed by Statler who was not amused with dad’s actions. It is obvious the he is still not got this family rearing thing worked out. Statler quickly retrieved the food, taking it away from Jr. In an effort to coax him into flight. After several fly-byes with the food trying to coax and tease Jr. into flight, she finally gave in as parents usually do, and she gave him back the food.
At one point, Caster was also in the mix, (flying around in the air with Statler) both screaming at one another. It was obviously he was not very happy with her actions, and she was not amused with his input!. With the three peregrines now all screaming, I can tell you that the both local the cardinals and robins were also very un-impressed!
7am has us scrambling for cover again as the auto sprinklers erupted all around us. Right, Thursdays is shower day!! Scrambling with cameras, folding chairs, computer, spotting scopes, tripods and many other handfuls of stuff now safely out in the parking lot out of harms way, we regrouped and returned out attention back to the watch.
7:35am Statler in with food to the fledgling, 12:20pm adult in with food to the fledgling, and 1:35pm adult in with food to Jr.,,, But this last food was not a food-drop. Statler made several fly-byes and some real teases in an effort to get Jr. back into the air. Good gracious, now let the screaming begin - (again)! Kinda reminds me why Marion and I chose not to have children!
Finally, Statler gave in and after more than a dozen fly-byes, gave Jr. the food on the roof.
At 7:30pm, the juvenile finally worked up enough courage to take another flight. Down to Park street, low hugging the Sun Life building, around to Union Street, this time with some good altitude - (about half way up the building) trying desperately to get enough altitude to get back to the upper roof top. (That’s where home really is don’t you know). This is his entire focus in life at this stage of his development,, to get back home!!
Sadly, once again, little Jr. made contact with the windows,, (a little more window cleaning with his face), and bounced off the window back into the air on a downward slope eventually landing on the 5th floor elevation next to the skylights, then off again shortly landng on the top rim of boiler smoke stack - (Union Street side).
After having watched in horror over the years, then having rescued and/or retrieved 22 different fledglings from smokestacks, boilers and other air ducts over the last 17 years, (sadly although not all were rescue or retrieved alive), I found myself running across the parking lot screaming at the top of lungs - DON’T LAND THERE, STAY UP, GET AWAY,,,, - (like he was able to understand what I was saying, or even aware of our presence in the parking lot). OK, so a little emotional. What can I say. I’m sure that everyone standing around me felt the same thing. After more than 208 hours in the streets on this fledge watch over the past 13 days, you can’t help get a little attached to this family.
Trying to process and load photos, but loosing battery power again,so may get cut off.
By 9:45 pm, just when we thought he would stay put for the evening,
