!!! Sheraton Centre Banding
June 03, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
Banding Day at the Toronto’s Sheraton Centre Hotel, turned out to be one the best so far and although the weather didn’t cooperate, everyone in attendance was very pleased with the results.
I would like to extend a huge THANK -YOU to Cynthia Bond, Arlene Rogers, Kay Drummond and all the staff of the Sheraton Centre Hotel for their ongoing assistance, patience and understanding to aide in the successful hatching of the Falcon’s nest. You should be proud, because without you this may not be possible.
Today the attendance was incredible and there was literally standing room only. One had to be creative to jockey themselves to the front of the room, and I wasn’t giving out any secrets on how that was accomplished. Being vertically challenged does help.
The Honorable Donna Cansfield, Minister Of Natural Resources, was the Guest of Honour and she took this opportunity to make a very important announcement of funding for stewardship programs within Ontario to assist with the preservation and extended protection of endangered species.
Also in attendance were representatives from major sponsors and ongoing supporters for the Canadian Peregrine Foundation Educational Outreach Programs and other Peregrine Projects.
To list a few and my apologies at this time if I have missed anyone.
TD Bank Friends of the Environment
Panasonic Canada
Ontario Power Generation
TransCanada Pipeline
Osler Hoskin and Harcourt
Solor Window Washing
and the dedicated volunteers that give their time to assist with the Fledgling Watch at all of nest locations.
A special attendance from a group of ladies from Rochester New York. These ladies are volunteers that assist in monitoring the fledglings at the Kodak site in Rochester.
Rhea Mae, the adult female at this site, was a hatchling in 2006, that these ladies watch grow to fledging, rescued and now see produce young of her own. An opportunity that is rare. A special guest of theirs, from Germany, another volunteer in her own country make the trip to Canada to witness this special event.
It was an honour to have them all attend.
Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel and the Canadian Peregrine Foundation would like to introduce to you the Peregrine Falcon Hatchlings of 2008
Unity Male 24 days of age and sporting a blue and red “taped” band
Belle Female 24 days of age, wearing a red and yellow “taped” band
Lilly Female 24 days of age, wearing a white and blue “taped” band
The coloured tape is place over the silver US Fish and Wildlife band and the Canadian Wildlife Band is still visible.
At this time the Canadian band numbers are not posted to the website, but are available upon request.
As always, Rhea Mae and Tiago were very much on patrol and did a great job of defending their nest ledge. Stooping and swooping that kept John on his toes until returning the young ones to the adults. On last check, all is well. The young falcons settled down near the nest tray and were fast asleep.
The adults were spotted at various posts on nearby buildings, ready to come to the assistance of the young, should the “predators” return.
It was a great turnout, a wonderful day and an event that won’t soon be forgotten.
