!!! FIRST FLEDGE
June 15, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
CPF Volunteer Reports:
Arriving in my office at 9am I found one juvenile on the standpipe and one running behind the nest box. A scan of the surroundings found an adult on the NW corner of 130 Adelaide. A scan of lower roofs found an adult on the railing of the air handling unit at 120 Adelaide, which is substantially lower than 130 and on a direct SE diagonal line from the nest ledge. Scanning slightly to the left, I found the first Sheraton fledge, one railing below and slightly west of the adult. She kindly stretched her leg as I got the scope on her and the red with yellow tape was clear to see - Belle had fledged!! I observed her until 12:30. The adult stayed for some time and then left. Belle explored all around, up and down on the railing and even sat on the fan housing! As time passed, she became more active. Lots of flapping and hopping around, but no flight. During this time I also noted two feedings on the nest ledge. At one point one adult passed low over Belle but she stayed put. Finally at noon, with much flapping she “flew” slightly to the south over more equipment housings. The adult who had been on 130 Adelaide immediately swooped down and landed on the west side of the roof. Belle’s “flight’ was brief and had no altitude. She then came down on to the roof proper and spent the next 25 minutes running and flapping back and forth on the roof to no avail in view of the adult. Absolutely no elevation. The adult took off and flew lazy circles around with the second adult. As I left at 12:30 Belle was walking under the piping on the roof.
