Project School Visit:
West Hill Public School (Scarborough)

Visit sponsored by: The New Ontario Trillium Foundation

In December 1999, we visited West Hill Public School in Scarborough with our 9-year-old female peregrine falcon "Qetesh".  Below are some comments from one of the teachers:

I am writing to praise the recent school visit by Qetesh, a live peregrine falcon, as part of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation's environmental education initiative.  The highly informative program brought science to life for the Grade 4 to 8 students of West Hill Public School, many of whom do not have frequent contact with wildlife in our inner city setting.

The presentation had explicit links to the new Ontario Science Curriculum, particularly with regard to ecosystems, habitats, and endangered species.  It was enhanced by a documentary video entitled "Life on the Ledge", which has become part of our school resource centre's reference collection, as well as a Student Study Guide which was used as a follow-up in science and remedial literacy classes.

Two of my Grade 6 students were motivated to write their own letters to the Canadian Peregrine Foundation after the visit.  They each received a personalized response which addressed all of their questions, a poem with an environmental message, a lapel pin, and their own copy of a newly revised Study Guide.  What a perfect model of writing for a real purpose!

I would highly recommend the CPF Project School Visit to neighbouring schools hoping to hook their students on science.

Ms. Shannon L. Keating, Grade 6 teacher
