Project School Visit:
Roxborough Park School (Hamilton)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In March 2000, we visited Hamilton's Roxborough Park School with our one-year-old male peregrine, "Scotty".  Below are a letter from one of the teachers, and two drawings from students:

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for the very wonderful visit our grade 4 and 5 classes at Roxborough Park School were fortunate enough to have with two members of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation, and also with our new friend Scotty, the one year old male peregrine falcon we met!

The children were thrilled to see Scotty face to face and were also very interested in the presentation given by the two representatives of the Foundation.  The students in our grade 4 classes were particularly interested in what Mr. Green and Marcel had to say as we are studying habitats, and communities as well as endangered species.  We were impressed by how much we learned in such a very short visit.  The information was presented in a clear way and really fit well with the curriculum we are studying.  Most particularly, the children were able to grasp the connection between the DDT that the falcon's prey was exposed to and the transference of the DDT to the falcon, as we have been learning about food chains in class.  The kids were also fascinated by the adaptations that Marcel explained (the stripes under the eyes and the pointed wings, etc.) because we have been studying adaptations as well.  But of course most impressive of all was meeting Scotty, the "real live falcon"!

After the visit, the children couldn't wait to write their thank you letters to Ms. Smith at the Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation!  The seeds of information and awareness that your visit has planted in these young minds will no doubt cultivate a larger broader awareness of the falcon's plight in our society and as we continue to work the day will come that much quicker when we can remove the falcon from the endangered list and enjoy watching them soar again in plenty in the wild!

Thank you again for the generosity that made possible your visit to our school.

Sincerely,

B. Playfair, Grade 4 teacher
