In March 2002, we visited Toronto's Rosethorn Public School with our young female peregrine falcon "Penny". Below is a letter from the principal:
Thank
you for providing us the opportunity to listen and learn about Peregrine
Falcons. The fact that Rosethorn School is so close to a nesting pair of
falcons made the experience that much more meaningful and interesting.
Your presenter, Dave Pfeffer, engaged the students in a discussion about
conservation and the natural and "unnatural" environment to which
these birds have had to adapt. He challenged them to think about
their role as future environmentalists.
Of course the star of the show was the female falcon that Dave brought to show.
The students were enthralled with her majestic stance and behaviours.
Equally interesting was the description of her as a "bird with a
personality". These discussions brought an instant connection between
student, bird and the environment. It was truly a wonderful experience for
staff and students to see and understand the plight of these and other birds
of prey.
Again, we thank you for the opportunity of linking us with the TD Canada Trust -
Friends of the Environment and highly recommend this presentation to others.
Sincerely,
Velta Mitrevics, Principal
