Project School Visit:
Richmond Street Public School (Thorold)

Visit sponsored by: Landcare Niagara

In December 2002, we visited Thorold's Richmond Street Public School with our female peregrine falcon, "Qetesh".  Below is a letter from the school:

On December 13, 2002, our Junior Division (grades 4 - 6) had an opportunity to see Maya Basdeo's presentation about peregrine falcons here in Canada.  For that brief time, the children forgot their excitement about Christmas and the staff put aside their worries about the coming concert - everyone was fascinated!

Maya did an excellent job of eliciting the students' prior knowledge and then building on that to explain the plight of the peregrines.  Her explanation of how the food chain worked against these raptors was especially well done.  The students were delighted to be able to see Qetesh and Maya answered their many questions patiently.

The material covered in this presentation dovetailed very nicely with the Grade Four Habitats unit from the Ontario curriculum which the Grade four classes have just completed.  The Resource books which Maya left with us will be a valuable resource in the future.

We are very grateful to Landcare Niagara for their sponsorship which enabled us to see this informative presentation.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Mrs. J. Gilliland
