Project School Visit:
Park Public School (Grimsby)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In February 2001, we visited Grimsby's Park Public School with our nine-year-old female peregrine falcon "Ariel".  Below are two drawings from the Grade 5 students, and a letter from the principal:

On Friday, February 23 David Pfeffer and Ariel visited our school thanks to generous funding from Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation.  Mr. Pfeffer made a compelling presentation to our junior students about the work of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation and the impact of our lifestyles on these magnificent birds.  Mr. Pfeffer's presentation was extremely interesting and informative and he incorporated several of the junior science curriculum expectations (Habitats and Communities, Diversity of Living Things) into his talk.  The highlight of the entire visit, however, was the uncaging of Ariel who proceeded to entertain us by indulging in her favourite meal - quail!

As educators we look for a variety of opportunities and materials to impart knowledge to our students.  This brief visit by Mr. Pfeffer and Ariel had more impact on the boys and girls at Park School than any textbook, videotape or class discussion our teachers could have planned.  Your website and videotape will augment further study by our staff and students.  The excitement generated by this visit has led to a new awareness of the consequences of our actions on the environment and a school-based decision to adopt a wild peregrine through "Project Adoption".

On behalf of the staff and students at Park Public School I thank you for including us in you school visit project.

Yours truly,

Kathy Siamro
Principal
