Project School Visit:
Northwood Public School (Brampton)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In December 2000, we visited Northwood Public School in Brampton with our 2-year-old male peregrine falcon "Scotty".  Below is one of the many welcome posters students made for Scotty, a photo taken at the presentation, and letter from the principal and one of the teachers.

On behalf of the 200 Grade Four and Five students of Northwood School I would like to thank you again for bringing Scotty the peregrine falcon to our school.  We were especially appreciative of the effort that was made to reschedule the visit so quickly when school was canceled on the day originally scheduled for Scotty's visit.  Students were involved in some pre- and post- visit activities about endangered animals and would have been very disappointed if the visit couldn't have been rescheduled or had to be postponed to another time of year.  Staff and students were very enthusiastic about the visit.  It clearly engaged them in a memorable learning experience.

While the visit tied directly to the Grade Four Science expectations, it also provided opportunities to address the reading, writing and oral language expectations at both grade levels.

Thank you again for the excellent learning experience for Northwood students.  I highly recommend the presentation to other schools.  I am sure that they will be as impressed as we were.  Good luck with your efforts to make a difference.

Sincerely,

Ms S. Pierson
Principal

I wish to thank you for the excellent presentation to our grade 4 and 5 students involving the peregrine falcon, Scotty.  It tied in directly with the grade 4 science curriculum expectations.  The students had been very excited about Scottie's visit and had done some research on the internet prior to his visit.

I believe that the students received a first-hand understanding about our environment and how it affects wildlife.  In the spring, we will be studying and researching about endangered animals, their habitats and environmental effects on wildlife.  This presentation has been a wonderful way of introducing the topic and motivating student interest and enthusiasm.

Once again, thank you for providing an excellent opportunity to our students to learn about endangered species and the environment.  I appreciate and congratulate you on your efforts in reaching out to schools and increasing student knowledge, motivation, and interest.

Sincerely,

Anjie Thom
Grade 4 teacher
