The Canadian Peregrine Foundation
Project School Visit:
M. B. McEachren Public School (London)
Visit sponsored by:
the Friends of the Environment Foundation
In May 2000, we visited
M.B. McEachren Public School in London with our 1-year-old male peregrine falcon
"Scotty". We haven't received any feedback from the students, but here is
a letter from the school:
Yesterday the children at our school
participated in an entertaining presentation by Amy from the Canadian
Peregrine Foundation intended to inform the students of the causes of
extirpation of these magnificent birds and of the Foundation's efforts to
reintroduce them to Ontario. They had an opportunity to demonstrate
their prior knowledge of endangered species, and met "Scotty", a
live juvenile peregrine falcon.
"Scotty" resides at the Mountsberg
Centre for Birds of Prey where every effort is made to return injured birds to
the wild. "Scotty", having been raised by humans, would be
unlikely to survive in the wild. Apparently the adolescent
"Scotty" is not a particularly good flyer, but he is being allowed
to develop his skills in the flight enclosure at Mountsberg with the goal of
allowing him to fly free in the future. Although "Scotty" will
be dependent on humans for his livelihood for the rest of his life, perhaps
his contribution to the educational efforts of the Peregrine Foundation will
assist in the successful repopulation of this species.
