Project School Visit:
Lexington Public School (Waterloo)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In February 2000, we visited Waterloo's Lexington Public School with our one-year-old educational peregrine, "Scotty".    Below are some of the drawings and poems from the students in grades 4 and 5.

COMMENTS FROM THE TEACHERS:

  • a very professional presentation: very knowledgeable about the topic, informative; organized; well paced for each age group; good management of groups, answered questions appropriately
  • an excellent complement to the Grade 4 unit, Habitats and Communities
  • booklets are a great resources - to be used in future studies at our school
  • able to motivate the students to engage in serious discussions which ensued after the visit and to explore the topic on the Internet - the website is a great idea!
  • impressed upon the students in a hands-on way just how delicate our ecosystems are and how important it is to respect our environment and make wise decisions regarding it
  • we highly recommend the presentation to any school, any grade level.  It is an excellent springboard for any study/program focusing on environmental issues

THE PEREGRINE FALCON

(by Michelle, age 9)

Peregrines are a bird of prey,
catching food in a special way.
Describing the peregrine would need a VERY good word,
Since the peregrine is one tough bird.
High cliffs or buildings is where they like to hang out,
Because peregrines like high places no doubt.
Scotty is the one I got to see,
No longer with his family.
We hope these falcons will stay and thrive,
So help this bird, the peregrine, survive.
