In May 2002, we visited Leesboro Central Public School in Throndale with our male peregrine falcon "Oscar". Below is a letter from the school:
Thank
you for letting a representative from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation come to
our school. We learned a lot about this falcon's life and the problems it
has faced because of DDT. We didn't know that DDT caused the falcons to
have soft egg shells. We also learned that peregrines were extirpated in
Ontario at one time and are now considered endangered in the province.
Most of us have never seen a peregrine falcon before, so we were very excited
when Oscar came out. We were amazed to learn how fast he can fly and that
he has such amazing eyesight, but has to move his entire head to see around him.
Please thank your sponsor, TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment, for
making this program available in our school. Through their generosity,
many other children like us will have the opportunity to experience this
excellent presentation.
Good luck to Oscar and the rest of the peregrine falcons under your care. We'll
be watching the skies around London to see if we can spot any of these
magnificent raptors.
Yours truly,
Mrs. Wieczorek's Grade 5 Class
