In January 2002, we visited John Campbell Public School in Windsor, with our one-year-old male peregrine falcon "Oscar". Below is a letter from the teachers followed by a couple of drawings from the students:
We were extremely impressed by Tracy's presentation of the
Peregrine Falcon. We can't wait to learn more about falcons when we study
Ancient Egypt and Aboriginal people. Oscar peaked our interest in learning
how the native habitats of these birds are changing.
Tracy's example of how the use of DDT as a chemical for treating insects can
spread throughout the food chain was very informative and really made us think
as teachers and students how closely all inhabitants of the earth interact.
We would especially like to thank Friends of the Environment for allowing the
junior students of our school the opportunity to see a falcon up close and learn
how all living things in our environment matter. We know the funding they
provided allowed us that opportunity.
We hope you can continue to visit other schools so they could enjoy this
experience as much as we did! We found Oscar to be very entertaining and
we are enclosing pictures for you of falcons in their natural environments; we
hope you like them.
Many thanks for a wonderful experience and we would like you to pass our thanks
along to your sponsors.
Sincerely,
Junior teachers
John Campbell PS
