Project School Visit:
Doncrest Public School (Richmond Hill)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In November 2000, we visited Richmond Hill's Doncrest Public School with our one-year-old male peregrine falcon "Scotty".  Below is a review two of the grade 4 students wrote about the event for their school newsletter:

On Monday, November 6th, Mrs. Joseph and Nash's classes went to the library.  There, we saw a real live peregrine falcon.  Marcel from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation came and showed us a peregrine falcon named Scotty.

Marcel first showed us a movie on peregrine falcons and why they are an endangered species.  A pesticide called DDT is sprayed on plants and is destroying the calcium in the falcons so they can no longer have babies.  The foundation is helping them live.

Marcel put on a leather glove so that the peregrine falcon's talons would not cut through his skin.  He took out the falcon from a box that was very dark.  We all had to be very quiet because we did not want the falcon to get scared and fly away.  When it flapped its wings, it felt like a huge fan.

It was very interesting to see a live falcon.  At first I was scared that it might fly away, but it didn't.  The presentation was great.  We liked it a lot, and we learned many things about peregrine falcons.  A photographer from the Liberal newspaper came and even took a picture for us with Scotty.

We want to thank the Canadian Peregrine Foundation for coming to see us and the Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation for sponsoring their visit.
