Project School Visit:
Cedarbrae Public School (Waterloo)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment Foundation

In November 2002 we visited Cedarbrae Public School with one of our peregrine falcons.  Below is feedback on the visit from the principal:

On November 14, Cedarbrae P.S. had the pleasure of a visit from a guest from your organization.  Our staff were particularly impressed with the quality of the presenter and had many favourable comments as feedback:

Students benefited because they were able to see specific characteristics/adaptations that enable peregrine falcons to live in particular habitats for survival.  Secondly, they were better able to understand how this animal meets it's basic needs.

The peregrine falcon presentation was fantastic!  My students were motivated to independently research in order to find out more about the peregrine falcon.  Many students visited the web site and brought pictures and information into class from the web site to share with classmates.  Other students visited the public library and brought in books they had found with information about the peregrine falcon.

From a teaching perspective, this presentation strongly supports the grade four science unit - Habitats and Communities.  This presentation made the students particularly aware of ways in which humans can change habitats and the effects of these changes on plants and animals within habitats.  Students were able to use newly learned vocabulary (e.g. habitats, niche, predator, prey, etc.) during the presentation.  This program allowed for the students to link what they had learned in the classroom about habitats, to the outside world.  Many of the activities provided in the teaching manual tie directly to the grade four curriculum and they are engaging learning activities that the students will enjoy.

On behalf of Cedarbrae P.S. I would like to thank you for the generous financial contribution which allows this presentation to be brought to use.  The students thoroughly enjoyed meeting your staff and seeing the bird.  The presentation was both educational and enjoyable.

Thanks again,

M. Knowlton, Principal
