In February 2003, we visited Archbishop O'Sullivan Catholic School in Kingston with one of our peregrine falcons.. Below is a note from the school:
On Wednesday, February 19, we were very fortunate to have a very special presentation at Archbishop O'Sullivan Catholic School, thanks to your organization, The Canadian Peregrine Foundation.
In a fifty minute presentation Maya Baadeo, a presenter from the foundation enlightened our Grade 4-6 students and staff on the endangered species, the Peregrine Falcon. Maya was a very dynamic speaker and engaged the students immediately, discussing how such a strong bird of prey became an endangered species and the efforts to help this species recover in Canada.
The girl. and boys were most excited to meet "Oetesh", a captive bred and human imprinted Peregrine Falcon who teamed up with Maya to demonstrate the falcon's physical strength and beauty.
In discussion with the students following the presentation these are some of their reflections:
Awesome, good presentation!
It was great to see a live falcon.
Maya knew so much about falcons who are considered dangerous and hunters.
The falcon is a living part of our world and we should respect it not hurt it
We learned that male falcon, dive quickly and that females are "larger" and "stronger" than male peregrines.
Falcons live and thrive in cities, on large, tall buildings.
The falcon's brain is as larger as his eye!!
We enjoyed watching 'Qetesh' spread out her wings.
Falcons kill prey with their strong feet.
The Peregrine falcon was cool
Maya's jokes were funny and I liked the map of the migrating route. It was interesting,
"When Oetesh's name was spoken she flapped her wings"'
In closing we wou!d also like to say thank you to the TD Canada Trust ,Friends of the Environment for providing the funding for the Peregrine Foundation to visit Archbishop O'Sullivan Catholic School to deliver the hands-on program. The Grade 4, Habitat and Communities and Grade 6 Diversity of Living Things and Characteristic of Flight units became much more meaningful, thanks to The Canadian Peregrine Foundation school visit.
We look forward to your next visit.
