Project School Visit:
St. John Bosco School (Port Colborne)

Visit sponsored by: Friends of the Environment

On March 25, 2003 we visited St. John Bosco School with one of our peregrine falcons, Ariel.  Below are letters and drawings inspired by the visit.

On behalf of the students at St. John Bosco I would like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for a wonderful presentation done by Maya Basdeo for the Grades 4 and 6 classes on Tuesday, March 25.

The session was greatly enjoyed by staff and students alike.  It was a rare opportunity to see such a magnificent bird as Ariel up close and personal.  The demonstration truly made an impression as to how we all need to be more careful and aware when becoming involved with the environment, as each ecological link does have an impact upon the next, often with severe consequences.

Maya is to be congratulated for relating to the students in such a positive manner.  Their interest was captured from the start, and despite the diversity of personalities and behaviours of both classes, every person present was following the presentation with great attention.  As was evident from the feedback, a great deal of information was absorbed during both sessions.  The Grade 4's were fascinated with the food chain developments, as well as details that related to the Medieval history unit.  The Grade 6 class found the details regarding flight intriguing as regards to their studies as well.

The video and work booklets will be put to good use, as both groups will be guided through an internet session to investigate the peregrine website, and relate the resulting information to various curriculum themes.

We greatly appreciate having sponsors like the TD Canada Trust - Friends of the Environment to provide funds that allow opportunities such as these visits with Maya and Ariel.  We hope that the opportunity may arise to have further sessions and share knowledge with more of the student population.

Thank you again for a remarkable demonstration.

Sincerely,

(Mrs.) Lynn Salter - librarian

Last month Maya from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation visited our school with her friend Arial.  She delivered a very interesting and educational presentation and the peregrine falcons to the Grade 4 and Grade 6 classes.  We all enjoyed her presentation thoroughly, and we learned many interesting facts about these birds.  Thank you again for a terrific learning experience!

Sincerely,

The Grade 4 and Grade 6 students
