On April 16, 2003 we visited St. Frances Cabrini School with one of our peregrine falcons. Below is a letter we received from the school.
I am writing this letter to express our sincere thanks for the excellent presentation we had at our school today. Students were looking forward to it and thoroughly enjoyed this informative session. The grade 4 students are currently working on a unit for social studies on Medieval Times and thought that the information presented on falconry and the use of wine to cool the birds off was "neat". Earlier on the year, both the grade 4 and 6 classes completed a unit on Habitats/Diversity of Living Things. Information presented in this session highlighted and reinforced a variety of concepts that the students had learned in these units. They were able to use the knowledge they have to fully participate in answering questions and in understanding why the chemical DDT had such a devastating effect on the peregrine falcons via the food chain. I would also like to commend Maya Basdeo on her excellent presentation. She had an excellent rapport with the students and kept them involved in the discussion at all times. There were over 70 students in the room and all of them remained focused throughout the entire presentation. I hope that this program can continue as I think the students (and teachers) learned a lot from it. Thank you especially to the TD Canada Trust - Friends of the Environment program for allowing programs like this to be provided at no cost to schools. I hope that our small donation will be put to good use and look forward to seeing you again in the future. Sincerely, Leanne Howse |
