Kathleen Rowe Memorial School was fortunate enough to have Maya Basdeo at our school on June 12th to present to our junior classes.

The Peregrine Falcon Presentation was amazing!  Maya delivered a well organized, dynamic presentation to both groups pf students that held their attention and had them interested, curious and wanting more.  Our grade four class has decided to adopt a peregrine through the program and each student is to bring in a loonie.

The program was very appropriate to the junior science and social studies programs.  The grade fours have just finished a unit on Habitats and the presentation complemented the program perfectly.  The students have researched and talked about the rainforest habitat, but with the Peregrine Falcon the words extinct and endangered are in our own backyard (Toronto).  What a better way to see our efforts to help an animal than through the adopt-a-bird program.  the presentation also tied in with the grade four unit on Medieval times and the use of falconry in that time.

It also related to the grade five social studies curriculum on Ancient Civilizations and the grade six science unit on The Diversity of Living Things.

Maya's love for the falcons is contagious and she communicates that to the students.  She is an excellent presenter and has a great rapport with the students. This type of presentation is excellent for the students to understand first hand what endangered means and to be able to see such a regal bird up close - an opportunity of a lifetime.

Thank you for providing the Kathleen Rowe students with such a wonderful and valuable experience.  We would welcome the opportunity to have Maya back at our school anytime.
