Project School Visit:
Bayview Heights Public School (Pickering)

Visit sponsored by: Ontario Power Generation

On April 07, 2003 we visited Bayview Heights Public School with one of our peregrine falcons, Ariel.  Below is a letter we received from the school.

On behalf of the grade 4 and grade 6 students at Bayview Heights. I would like to thank you for introducing us to Ariel and for providing us with an informative session.  You touched on numerous topics of interest related to our science curriculum.

Our grade 4 classes have studied animal habitats and communities and made the following comments:

  • I learned that Peregrine falcons can get DDT from other birds they eat

  • The peregrine falcon's speed of flight in a dive is close to 320 km/h

  • The females usually lay about 3 - 4 eggs

  • Something I liked very much about the presentation and thought was interesting is that the females are larger than the males

Our grade 6 students have been studying Diversity of Living Things as well as flight.  Students made the following comments:

  • She taught us the danger of DDT on the environment

  • She explained why the peregrine was endangered and greatly enhanced our concept by showing us a live falcon

  • She taught us its eating habits, nesting areas and other interesting things

  • DDT caused the egg shells to become thin and they would crack ... the community decided to build boxes so the eggs would not fall off the buildings

  • There were just about 200 peregrine falcons left all around Canada and we now wouldn't even know of Peregrine Falcons if the Peregrine Falcon Society didn't realize the problem at the right time

We would also like to extend our appreciation to Ontario Power Generation for their sponsorship of this program.

Sincerely,

Paul Crane - Principal
