Project School Visit:
Memorial Park Public School
On March the 24th, 2006, we visited Cornwall's Memorial Park Public School. Below is a letter from the school.
On March 24, 2006, our students were fortunate to have a presentation from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation. All of our junior students participated in this presentation, which they found fascinating. The students were very interested in how the birds became extinct, as well as the extensive efforts that have been, and are, being made to increase the number of these birds in the wild. They especially enjoyed being able to see a live peregrine falcon.
The presenter, Maya Basdeo, was very infonnative and knowledgeable. She used excellent communication skills with the students and eagerly answered their many questions.
Presentations such as this are invaluable to schools, since they provide the students with first hand information and real life experiences tied to the curriculum. In Grade 4, students study various habitats in Science. They learn about how the species that live within a given habitat are all dependent on one another. In Grade 6, one of the Science strands focuses on Biodiversity and how all species are ultimately connected in the web of life. The peregrine falcon presentation demonstrates very clearly how strong the interdependence of species is. It is also a wonderful, albeit devastating, example of how human actions can effect the animal kingdom. This is a life lesson for all students, regardless of age.
On behalf of all staff and students involved, we would like to thank you for making this important, and informative presentation available to our school. It is a day that the students will remember for a long time.
Sincerely,
Kim Casselman
