Smith School
On October the 11th, 2003, we visited Grimsby's Smith School. Below are letters from some of the students and the school.

We, the grade 4 and 6 students and teachers at Smith School, thank you and the Lloyd
Carr-Harris Foundation for the rare opportunity of observing a Great Horned Owl up
close. It brought our novel study, Owls in the Family to life for the students. We also
learned a vast amount of information about the threats and recovery of the Peregrine
Falcon population. It is a strong message that we all can make a difference.
The grade 4 students are just beginning a project to study endangered and threatened
species in Canada. As well as describe the species' habitat and position in the food
chain, the students are required to identify the threats and follow up with conservation
efforts and ideas. Your presentation is a real-life example of the lessons we are trying
to instill in our students, so that they become responsible stewards of the environment.
Maya's talk reinforced much of the vocabulary and concepts we are stressing in the
classroom. The program is a perfect fit to the curriculum.
Secondly, a huge thanks to the Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation. Our small school would
never have been able to afford a class visit without their generous support. We would
have had to charge each student approximately $10.00. This would have been
prohibitive, and a teacher's day is full enough without searching for local sponsorships.
The Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation has provided a great service to our school
community.
Lastly, I have included letters from the grade four students to show the impression your
presentation has left upon them.
Working together to educate our children,
Cheryl Mojeski,
Grade 4 teacher
