Etobicoke

Daily Updates - Jan.-Mar., 1998

January
-- Both Toby and Alberta were observed a few times in the area of the nest site, thereby confirming that they did not go south for the winter.

February
-- Again, several sitings of both adults were made. Photographs are available and will be added to the Etobicoke Photo Gallery soon.

Friday, February 20
-- Today new video equipment was installed at the downtown Toronto site. Early next week, the same high-tech Panasonic camera will be installed overlooking the Etobicoke site by Intercon Security.
-- A Falcon Watch Centre will be opened in the near future in the lobby of the East Tower, where visitors will be able to view the video signal from the nest ledge

Tuesday, February 24
-- As the new video equipment was being installed by Intercon Security, Toby and Alberta were present the entire time to supervise and make sure the debris was cleaned up after the job was finished. Several times it was reported they dive-bombed the installers, but that wasn't really the case at all; they just wanted to have a closer look to make sure all the right wires were going to the right place. After all, if they're about to make their debut to the world via video, they wanted to make sure they were seen in the best possible light.

Thursday, February 26
-- One of the tenants living in a pent-house of the Kingsway condominium directly across from the nest site reported seeing THREE peregrine falcons on the nest ledge at one time. She also observed that two of the peregrines were not at all happy at the presence of the third falcon and made several attempts -- but not aggressive ones -- to chase it away. This sighting was also confirmed by security personnel in the Kingsway. The guessing is, perhaps one of last year's chicks -- Kingsway -- also stayed around in the vicinity over the winter. Remember, Kingsway was taken to the Wild Bird Clinic for six weeks and not returned to the nest ledge until mid-August. If this is the case, could it be Kingsway that has been seen in the area of Square One mall in Mississauga a few times this year?
